SOYBEAN VARIETY PERFORMANCE TRIAL

Ted Helms, NDSU Department of Plant Sciences

Richard Greenland

Soybeans usually produce well in North Dakota. This replicated trial had 20 soybean varieties.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Soil:

Embden sandy loam and Maddock sandy loam; pH=6.3; 2.6% organic matter; soil-P and soil-K were very high; soil-S was low.

Previous crop:

2002 - sweetcorn; 2001 - carrot; 2000 - broccoli, cabbage and cauliflower.

Seedbed Preparation:

Disked on May 19. Multiweeded (field cultivated) twice on May 20 to incorporate herbicide.

Planting:

Planted on May 21 in 30-inch rows. All beans were inoculated just prior to planting.

Plots:

Plots were 17 ft long by 10 ft (4 rows) wide. There were four reps.

Fertilizer:

On April 9, broadcast 11 lbs N/acre and 52 lbs P205 as 11-52-0, 30 lbs K2O as 0-0-60, and 18 lbs N/acre and 20 lbs S/acre as 21-0-0-24.

Irrigation:

Overhead sprinkler irrigation as needed.

Pest control:

Weeds were controlled with Sonalan (2 pt/acre preplant incorporated on May 20), Dual II (1 pt/acre on May 22), Raptor + COC (4 oz/acre  + 1 % volume on June 18), and by hand weeding. Sprayed Benlate (1 lb/acre on July 17) to control disease.

Harvest:

Harvested on October 8 with a Hege plot combine.

2Lodging is from 1 to 5: 1 is erect; 5 is flat on ground.

3Values in the same column followed by the same letter are not significantly different at the 0.05 level.

NOTE: Walsh (RR) had poor stands because emergence was poor. ND98-2252(C) had slightly reduced stands.
