FIELD CORN HYBRID PERFORMANCE TRIAL

Corn generally grows very well in this area of North Dakota. The short summer is compensated for by long days and lots of sunshine. This performance trial tested 66 hybrids.
MATERIALS AND METHODS
Soil: |
Maddock sandy loam, and Hecla sandy loam; pH=6.0; 2.7% organic matter; soil-P and soil-K were very high; soil-S was medium. |
Previous crops: |
2002 - onion, cabbage; 2001 - broccoli, cauliflower, artichoke, pepper, sweetcorn, pumpkin and winter squash; 2000 - field corn |
Seedbed preparation: |
Disked on April 28. Multiweeded (field cultivated) to smooth seed bed on April 28. |
Planting: |
Planted April 28 in 30-inch rows. Thinned to 28,000 plants/acre on June 18. |
Fertilizer: |
On April 9, broadcast 11 lbs N/acre and 52 lbs P205 as 11-52-0, 30 lbs K2O as 0-0-60 and 18 lbs N/acre and 20 lbs S/acre as 21-0-0-24. Sprayed 40 lbs N/acre as 32-0-0 on April 28. Knifed in 125 lbs of N/acre as 28-0-0 + N-serve (1 qt/acre) on June 16. |

Underground drip irrigation as needed |
Pest Control: |
Sprayed Gramaxone + COC + Outlook + AAtrex (2 pt +1 qt/25 gal + 1 pt + 0.5 lb (ai)/acre on April 28), Buctril (1 pt/acre on May 29), Accent (2/3 oz/acre on June 11), cultivated on June 18, and hand weeded for weed control. Applied Asana (8 oz/acre on July 8) for control of corn borer. |
Harvest: |
Harvested with a plot combine on October 9. |
