Soil:

Embden loam and Maddock sandy loam; pH=7.4; 2.2% organic matter; soil-P and soil-K were very high; soil-S was low.

Previous crop:

2001 - sweetcorn and tomato; 2000 - carrot; 1999 - pepper and field corn.

Seedbed

Preparation:

Coulter chiseled 15 inches deep on April 18. Multiweeded (field cultivated) three times; once on May 14 to smooth seed bed and twice on May 15 to incorporate herbicide.

Planting:

Planted on May 15 in 30-inch rows. All beans were inoculated just prior to planting.

Plots:

Plots were 17 ft long by 10 ft (4 rows) wide. There were four reps.

Fertilizer:

Broadcast 18 lbs N/acre and 20 lbs S/acre as 21-0-0-24 on Apr 18.

Irrigation:

Overhead sprinkler irrigation as needed.

Pest

control:

Weeds were controlled with Sonalan (2 pt/acre preplant incorporated on May 15), Lasso (2 qt/acre on May 16), Poast + Dash (1.5 pt/acre + 1 pt/acre on June 12), Raptor + COC (4 oz + 2 pt/acre on June 20), and by hand weeding. Sprayed Benlate (0.5 lb/acre on July 9) to control disease.

Harvest:

Harvested on October 14 with a Hege plot combine.
