PEPPER HYBRID PERFORMANCE TRIAL

Richard Greenland, Leonard Besemann, and Delores Anderson

Results summary

Table 29. Quantity and yield of peppers

Table 30. Cumulative yields of marketable peppers

Table 31. Quality of peppers

Peppers generally grow surprisingly well in southern North Dakota, although late in the season some hot peppers lose their heat if the weather is too cool. In cool years, yields and quality may be reduced.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Soil:

Embden sandy loam; pH=6.8; 2.9% organic matter; soil-P was very high; soil-K was high; soil-S was low.

Previous crop:

2001 - field corn; 2000 - edible bean; 1999 - carrot.

Seedbed

preparation:

Coulter chiseled 15 inches deep on April 18. Multiweeded (field cultivated) three times; once on May 16 to smooth the seedbed and twice on May 28 to incorporate herbicide.

Planting:

Peppers were seeded in the greenhouse on April 8. Plants were hand transplanted on May 28. Planting pattern was paired rows (12 inches between rows) on 4 ft centers. In-row spacing was 18 inches within a single row, which put a plant every 9 inches for the paired rows. As it was planted, each plant received 1 cup of fertilizer solution (1.25% solution of 10-34-0).

Plots:

Plots were 17 ft long by 4 ft (one paired row) wide. There were 4 reps.

Fertilizer:

Broadcast 18 lbs N/acre and 20 lbs S/acre as 21-0-0-24 on April 18. Side dressed 50 lbs N/acre as urea on June 21.

Irrigation:

Surface drip irrigation as needed.

Pest control:

Weeds were controlled by Treflan (1 pt/acre on May 28) and by hand weeding.

Harvest:

Hand harvested 9 times from July 23 to Sept 18.

RESULTS

Paladin was again the best pepper. Vivaldi was an elongated pepper. All the other peppers were blocky. Crusader had the lowest yields of the four peppers tested, however, all of the peppers tested produced good yields.
