FIELD CORN HYBRID PERFORMANCE TRIAL

        Corn generally grows very well in this area of North Dakota. The short summer is compensated for by long days and lots of sunshine. This performance trial tested 64 hybrids.


MATERIALS AND METHODS


Soil:

Maddock sandy loam; pH=7.7; 1.9% organic matter; soil-P and soil-K were very high; soil-S was medium.

Previous crops:

2001 - cabbage, onion, and potato; 2000 - onion, potato, tomato, pepper, and sweetcorn; 1999 - pumpkin, winter squash, garden pea, radish, broccoli, and cabbage.

Seedbed

preparation:

Disked on Nov 2, 2001. Coulter chiseled 15 inches deep on April 18. Multiweeded (field cultivated) to smooth seed bed on May 1.

Planting:

Planted May 1 in 30-inch rows. Thinned to 28,000 plants/acre on June 21.

Fertilizer:

On April 18, broadcast 18 lbs N/acre and 20 lbs S/acre as 21-0-0-24. Sprayed 50 lbs N/acre as 28-0-0 on April 25. Knifed in 125 lbs of N/acre as 28-0-0 + N-serve (1 qt/acre) on June 18. Fertigated 30 N/acre as 28-0-0 on July 26.

Irrigation:

Overhead sprinkler irrigation as needed.

Pest

Control:

Sprayed Frontier + AAtrex (1 pt + 0.5 lbs/acre on May 1), Accent + MSO (⅔ oz/acre + 1 qt/25 gal on May 24), and Buctril (1.5 pt/acre on June 17), cultivated on June 12, and hand weeded for weed control. Applied Asana (8 oz/acre on July 1) and Ambush (8 oz/acre on July 9) for control of corn borer.

Harvest:

Harvested with a plot combine on October 4.
