'SUPERSWEET' SWEET CORN HYBRID PERFORMANCE TRIAL, 2001

Richard Greenland, Leonard Besemann and Delores Anderson

Results summary

Table 22. Corn development, ear height and ear removal score for sh2 sweet corn

Table 23. Number of ears per acre and yield of sh2 sweet corn

Table 24. Husk characteristics of sh2 sweet corn

Table 25. Ear characteristics of sh2 sweet corn

Sweet corn grows very well in this area of North Dakota. The short summer is compensated for by long days and lots of sunshine. Sweet corn always matures before frost.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Soil:

Maddock sandy loam and Embden Loam; pH=7.4; 2.5% organic matter; soil-P and soil-K were very high; soil-S was very low.

Previous crops:

2000 - carrot; 1999 - pepper and field corn; 1998 - canola and edible bean.

Seedbed

preparation:

Disked May 16. Multiweeded (field cultivated) once on May 16 to smooth seed bed and incorporate fertilizer.

Planting:

Seeded on May 16 in 30-inch rows. Planting depth was about 3/4 inch. Plots were seeded at a rate of 50,000 seeds/acre, then later thinned to 28,000 plants/acre.

Plots:

Plots were 5 rows (12.5 ft) wide by 17 ft long. There were 4 reps.

Fertilizer:

On April 19, broadcast 10 lbs N/acre and 50 lbs P2O5/acre as 10-50-0 and 18 lbs N/acre and 20 lbs S/acre as 21-0-0-24. Sprayed 50 lbs N/acre as 28-0-0 on May 16. Knifed in 100 lbs N/acre as 28-0-0 + N-serve (1 qt/acre) on June 27.

Irrigation:

Overhead sprinkler irrigation as needed.

Pest Control:

Dual II (1.5 pt/acre on May 17) and Basagran + Attrex (1 pt/acre + .45 lb ai/acre) controlled weeds. Sprayed Dipel (2 lb/acre on July 2) to control European corn borer and corn earworm.

Harvest:

Hand harvested 23 to 25 days after half-silk date. Only the center row of each plot was harvested. Harvested from Aug 3 to Aug 13.

RESULTS

Most hybrids had good yield and quality. Saturn, Bicolor Saturn, BSS 1690 VP and Cronus were the best looking but Cronus was difficult to remove from the stalk. BSS 6284, BSS 1690 VP and GSS 5022 had the highest yields.

2Corn was over planted. After stand count, corn was thinned to about 28,000 plants/acre (unless there were fewer than

  28,000 plants that emerged).

3Distance from ground to base of ear.

4Indicates ease of ear removal. The higher the score, the easier it was to remove the ear.

5Values in the same column followed by the same letter are not significantly different at the 0.05 level.
