'SUGAR ENHANCED' SWEET CORN HYBRID PERFORMANCE TRIAL, 2001

Table 21. Ear characteristics of se sweet corn

Sweet corn grows very well in this area of North Dakota. The short summer is compensated for by long days and lots of sunshine. Sweet corn always matures before frost.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Soil:

Maddock sandy loam, Hecla Sandy loam and Embden Sandy Loam; pH=6.7; 2.2% organic matter; soil-P and soil-K were very high; soil-S was very low.

Previous crops:

2000 - field corn; 1999 - soybean; 1998 - tomato.

Seedbed

preparation:

Disked on April 20. Multiweeded (field cultivated) twice; once on May 8 to smooth the seed bed and once on May 9 to incorporate fertilizer.

Planting:

Seeded on May 9 in 30-inch rows. Planting depth was about 2 inches. Plots were seeded at a rate of 50,000 seeds/acre, then later thinned to 28,000 plants/acre.

Plots:

Plots were 5 rows (12.5 ft) wide by 17 ft long. There were 4 reps.

Fertilizer:

On April 19, broadcast 10 lbs N/acre and 50 lbs P2O5/acre as 10-50-0 and 18 lbs N/acre and 20 lbs S/acre as 21-0-0-24. Sprayed 50 lbs N/acre as 28-0-0 on May 9. Knifed in 50 lbs N/acre as 28-0-0 + N-serve (1 qt/acre) on June 22.

Irrigation:

Underground drip irrigation as needed.

Pest Control:

Dual II (1.5 pt/acre on May 9) and hand weeding controlled weeds. Sprayed Dipel (2 lb/acre on July 2) to control European corn borer and corn earworm.

Harvest:

Hand harvested 23 to 25 days after half-silk date. Only the center row of each plot was harvested. Harvested from July 27 to Aug 10.

RESULTS

Most hybrids had good yield and quality. BC 4806, Bon Appetit TSW, GH7006 and Silver Princess were the best looking. Luscious TSW, Bon Appetit TSW and Silver Princess had the top yields. Honey Select was the sweetest but did not look as good.
