SOYBEAN VARIETY PERFORMANCE TRIAL, 2001

Ted Helms, NDSU Deparment of Plant Sciences

Richard Greenland

Table 33. Results of the soybean performance trial

Soybeans usually produce well in North Dakota. This replicated trial had 20 soybean varieties, including several natto type soybeans.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Soil:

Embden Sandy Loam and Hecla Sandy Loam; pH=7.1; 2.8% organic matter; soil-P and soil-K were very high; soil-S was very low.

Previous crop:

2000 - potato; 1999 - carrot; 1998 - sweet corn.

Seedbed

Preparation:

Disk on April 28. Multiweeded (field cultivated) twice on May 14 to smooth seedbed and incorporate herbicide.

Planting:

Planted on May 14 in 30-inch rows.

Plots:

Plots were 17 ft long by 10 ft wide. There were four reps.

Fertilizer:

On April 19, broadcast 10 lbs N/acre and 50 lbs P2O5/acre as 10-50-0 and 18 lbs N/acre and 20 lbs S/acre as 21-0-0-24.

Irrigation:

Surface drip irrigation as needed.

Pest

control:

Weeds were controlled with Treflan (1 pt/acre preplant incorporated on May 14), Dual II (1.5 pt/acre on May 14), Pursuit (1.44 oz/acre on June 7) and by handweeding.

Harvest:

Harvested on October 3 with a Hege plot combine.

Many soybean plants had phenoxy type injury symptoms in July. We assume this was from spray drift from an adjoining area. It is very probable that yields were affected by this spray drift. The taller soybeans were most affected. The soybeans lodged more than normal.
