FIELD CORN HYBRID PERFORMANCE TRIAL

Corn generally grows very well in this area of North Dakota. The short summer is compensated for by long days and lots of sunshine. This performance trial tested 52 hybrids.


MATERIALS AND METHODS


Soil:

Embden Sandy Loam, Hecla sandy loam and Maddock sandy loam; pH=7.4; 2.1% organic matter; soil-P and soil-K were very high; soil-S was very low.

Previous crops:

2000 - pepper; 1999 - cabbage and soybean; 1998 - onion and pepper.

Seedbed

preparation:

Disked on April 28. Multiweed (field cultivate) to incorporate fertilizer and smooth seed bed on May 2.

Planting:

Planted May 3 in 30-inch rows. Thinned to 28,000 plants/acre on June 12.

Fertilizer:

On April 19, broadcast 10 lbs N/acre and 50 lbs P2O5/acre as 10-50-0 and 18 lbs N/acre and 20 lbs S/acre as 21-0-0-24. Sprayed 75 lbs N/acre as 28-0-0 on May 2. Knifed in 100 lbs of N/acre as 28-0-0 + N-serve (1 qt/acre) on June 20. Fertigated 35 N/acre as 28-0-0 on June 26.

Irrigation:

Overhead sprinkler irrigation as needed.

Pest

Control:

Sprayed Frontier and Bladex (1 pt and 1.5 lbs/acre on May 9), Accent + MSO ((methylated seed oil) at ⅔ oz/acre + 1 qt/25 gal on May 26), Buctril (1.5 pt/acre on June 19) and hand weeding. Sprayed Dipel (2 lb/acre on July 2) for insect control.

Harvest:

Harvested with a plot combine on October 5.
