CABBAGE HYBRID PERFORMANCE TRIAL

Table 8. Cabbage head characteristics for the late (slaw market) harvest
Cabbage grows well in the cool climate of North Dakota, but cabbage production is limited due to market uncertainty and lack of information on available hybrids. Data were collected to determine suitability of these hybrids for both the fresh and slaw markets with direct seeded and transplanted cabbage.
MATERIALS AND METHODS
Soil: |
Maddock sandy loam; pH=7.2; 2.5% organic matter; soil-P and soil-K were very high; soil-S was very low. |
Previous crops: |
2000 - onion; 1999 - pumpkin and winter squash; 1998 - field corn. |
Seedbed preparation: |
Disked on April 25. Multiweeded (field cultivated) three times May 2; once to incorporate fertilizer and twice to incorporate herbicide. |
Planting: |
Direct seeded cabbage and barley cover crop (one bu/acre) on May 4 with a Monosem precision planter. Seeds were spaced about 7 inches apart in 18-inch rows. Plants were later thinned to 15 inches apart (about 26,000 plants/acre). Seeds were placed about ½ to ¾ inches deep into a flat, fine seedbed. Started transplants in greenhouse on March 22. Transplanted cabbage on May 8 (no cover crop planted). Sprayed Poast + Dash (1.5 pt/acre + 1 pt/acre) on May 30 to kill the barley cover crop. |
Plots: |
Main plots were 34 ft long by one row (17 inches) wide. Each main plot was divided into 2, 17-ft long sections. The study had 4 reps. |
Fertilizer: |
On April 19, broadcast 10 lbs N/acre and 50 lbs P2O5/acre as 10-50-0 and 18 lbs N/acre and 20 lbs S/acre as 21-0-0-24. Sprayed 50 lbs N/acre as on May 2, sprayed 60 lbs N/acre on June 4. Fertigated 30 lbs N/acre on July 11 and July 30 as 28-0-0. |
Irrigation: |
Overhead sprinkler irrigation as needed. |
Pest Control: |
Weeds were controlled using Treflan (1 pt/acre applied preplant incorporated on May 2), Dacthal (10 lbs/acre on May 10), Lentagran (2 lbs/acre (transplants on June 4) and (direct seeded on June 12)), Poast + Dash (1.5 pt + 1 pt/acre (direct seeded) on June 20) and by hand weeding. Sprayed Sevin (1 qt/acre on May 14 and May 24) to control flea beetle. Asana (8 oz/acre all cabbage on June 19, July 17 and direct seeded on June 4) and DiPel (1 lb/acre on July 5, July 9, July 25, Aug 1, and Aug 8,) to control cabbage looper and cabbage worm. |
Harvest: |
One section of each main plot was hand harvested when heads were firm and of marketable size (early harvest). The other section was harvested about two weeks later (late harvest). Cabbage head characteristics were measured on representative cabbage heads selected at each harvest from each plot. |
Cheers was the best cabbage overall for both fresh and slaw market in both transplanted and direct seeded studies. Transplanted cabbage did better than direct seeded cabbage.

2Stand on May 18 (before thinning).
3Harvest spread = days between first head ready to harvest until last head in plot ready to harvest.
4Head shape: 1 is very flat; 2 is flat; 3 is round; 4 is tall; 5 is very tall.
5If probability is 0.05 or less then there was a significant difference between direct seeded vs. transplanted cabbage.
6Values in the same column followed by the same letter are not significantly different at the 0.05 level.

2Visual estimate of head density. 1 is low, 5 is high.
3Inside head color: 1 is whitish green; 2 is yellow green 8=red.
4Outside head color: 2 to 4 is light to dark green; 7-9 is light to dark red.
5If probability is 0.05 or less then there was a significant difference between direct seeded vs. transplanted cabbage.
6Values in the same column followed by the same letter are not significantly different at the 0.05 level.

2Stand on May 18 (before thinning).
3Head shape: 1 is very flat; 2 is flat; 3 is round; 4 is tall; 5 is very tall.
4 If probability is 0.05 or less then there was a significant difference between direct seeded vs. transplanted cabbage.
5Values in the same column followed by the same letter are not significantly different at the 0.05
level. No letters in column means no significant differences between values in that column.
