BROCCOLI and CAULIFLOWER HYBRID PERFORMANCE TRIALS

Richard Greenland, Leonard Besemann and Delores Anderson

Broccoli and cauliflower usually grow well in North Dakota, but hot days during head initiation can cause problems.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Soil:

Maddock sandy loam; pH=6.8 2.0% organic matter; soil-P was high; soil-K was very high; soil-S was very low.

Previous crops:

2000 - field corn; 1999 - soybean; 1998 - pumpkin.

Seedbed

preparation:

Disked on April 20. Multiweeded (field cultivated) three times on May 2: once to level the field and incorporate fertilizer; and twice to incorporate herbicide.

Planting:

Direct seeded broccoli and cauliflower on May 4 with a Stanhay vegetable planter modified to drill barley (1 bu/acre, 6-inch rows) between and parallel to the rows of broccoli and cauliflower. Broccoli and cauliflower seeds were planted about 5 and 7.5 inches apart in 16-inch rows. Cauliflower plants were later thinned to one plant every 15 inches. Seeds were placed about ½ to ¾ inches deep into a flat, fine seedbed. Sprayed Poast + Dash (1.5 pt/acre + 1 qt/acre) on May 30 to kill the barley cover crop.

Plots:

Each plot was 2 rows (3 ft) wide by 17 ft long. The studies had 4 reps.

Fertilizer:

On April 19, broadcast 10 lbs N/acre and 50 lbs P2O5/acre as 10-50-0 and 18 lbs N/acre and 20 lbs S/acre as 21-0-0-24. Sprayed 50 lbs N/acre as 28-0-0 on May 2. Applied 30 lbs N/acre as urea on July 11.

Irrigation:

Underground drip irrigation as needed.

Pest

Control:

Weeds were controlled using Treflan (1 pt/acre applied preplant incorporated on May 2), Dacthal (10 lbs/acre on May 14) and by hand weeding. Sprayed Sevin (1 qt/acre on May 14) to control flea beetle. Sprayed DiPel (1 lb/acre on July 2, July 9, July 25, Aug 1, and Aug 8) and Asana (8 oz/acre on June 19, July 17, and Aug 16) to control cabbage looper and cabbage worm.

Harvest:

Primary broccoli heads were harvested 12 times from July 13 to August 31. Secondary heads were not harvested. Cauliflower heads were harvested 6 times from August 7 to August 31.

RESULTS

None of the cultivars of broccoli or cauliflower produced marketable heads this year. This was probably due to hot days during head formation. No results are presented because of the poor quality.
