'SUPERSWEET' SWEET CORN HYBRID PERFORMANCE TRIAL, 2000

Results summary

Table 28. Husk characteristics of sh2 sweet corn.

Table 29. Ear characteristics of sh2 sweet corn.

Sweet corn grows very well in this area of North Dakota. The short summer is compensated for by long days and lots of sunshine. Sweet corn always matures before frost.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Soil: Maddock sandy loam; pH=7.4; 1.9% organic matter; soil-P, soil-K, and soil-S were very high.
Previous crops: 1999 - cabbage; 1998 - carrot and field corn ; 1997 - onion.
Seedbed preparation: Disked on 29 October 1999. Multiweeded (field cultivated) three times: April 5, May 1, and May 9.
Planting: Seeded on May 9 in 30-inch rows. Planting depth was about 1 inch. Plots were seeded at a rate of 50,000 seeds/acre, then later thinned to 28,000 plants/acre.
Plots: Plots were 5 rows (12.5 ft) wide by 17 ft long. There were 4 reps.
Fertilizer: On April 4, broadcast 18 lbs N/acre and 20 lbs S/acre as 21-0-0-24. Applied 50 lbs N/acre as 28-0-0 on April 28. Knifed in 55 lbs N/acre as 28-0-0 + N-serve (1 qt/acre) on June 27. Fertigated 35 lbs N/acre as 28-0-0 on June 27.
Irrigation: Overhead sprinkler irrigation as needed.
Pest Control: Dual + Cypro (1.5 pt/acre + 1.5 lb/acre applied on May 9), cultivation, and hand weeding controlled weeds. Sprayed Dipel (2 lbs/acre on July 3) to control European corn borer and corn earworm.
Harvest: Hand harvested 23 to 25 days after half-silk date. Only the center row of each plot was harvested. Harvested from Aug 2 to Aug 16.

RESULTS

Most hybrids had good quality and yields. Bicolor Saturn, BSS 6284, GSS 3486, Saturn, and White Saturn had the best looks, but GSS 3486 was difficult to remove from the stalk. Attribute BSS 0977, ACX 749, and Bicolor Saturn had the highest yields.

2Stand before thinning. After stand count, corn was thinned to about 28,000 plants/acre (unless there were fewer than 28,000 plants that emerged).

3Distance from ground to base of ear.

4Indicates ease of ear removal. The higher the score, the easier it was to remove the ear.
