'SUGAR ENHANCED' SWEET CORN HYBRID TRIAL, 2000

Table 25. Ear characteristics of se sweet corn.

Sweet corn grows very well in this area of North Dakota. The short summer is compensated for by long days and lots of sunshine. Sweet corn always matures before frost.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Soil: Maddock sandy loam; pH=7.3; 2.2% organic matter; soil-P was very high; soil-K was high; soil-S was very high.
Previous crops: 1999 - carrot; 1998 - potato; 1997 - sweet corn.
Seedbed preparation: Disked on 29 October 1999. Multiweeded (field cultivated) twice: April 5 and May 1.
Planting: Seeded on May 1 in 30-inch rows. Planting depth was about 2 inches. Plots were seeded at a rate of 50,000 seeds/acre, then later thinned to 28,000 plants/acre.
Plots: Plots were 5 rows (12.5 ft) wide by 17 ft long. There were 4 reps.
Fertilizer: On April 4, broadcast 18 lbs N/acre and 20 lbs S/acre as 21-0-0-24. Knifed in 100 lbs N/acre as 28-0-0 + N-serve (1 qt/acre) on June 27.
Irrigation: Overhead sprinkler irrigation as needed.
Pest Control: Dual + Cypro (1.5 pt/acre + 1.5 lb/acre applied on May 3), cultivation, and hand weeding controlled weeds. Sprayed Dipel (2 lbs/acre on July 3) to control European corn borer and corn earworm.
Harvest: Hand harvested 23 to 25 days after half-silk date. Only the center row of each plot was harvested. Harvested from July 27 to Aug 10.

RESULTS

Most hybrids had good yields and quality. Yields of 'sugar enhanced' sweet corn were generally higher than yields of 'supersweet' sweet corn. Silver Princess, Temptation, Wizard, and Silver King were the best looking. Honey Select, Kandy Plus, and Sunset had the top yields. Honey Select was the sweetest. The Sweet Scarlet did not develop a good red color until the corn was old.

2Stand before thinning. After stand count, corn was thinned to about 28,000 plants/acre (unless there were fewer than 28,000 plants that emerged).

3Distance from ground to base of ear.

4Indicates ease of ear removal. The higher the score, the easier it was to remove the ear.
