PEPPER HYBRID PERFORMANCE TRIAL

Richard Greenland, Leonard Besemann, and Heidi Eslinger

Results summary

Table 27. Quantity and yield of peppers.

Table 28. Quality of sweet peppers.

Table 29. Cumulative yields of marketable (US Fancy plus US #1) peppers.

Peppers grow surprisingly well in southern North Dakota, although late in the season some hot peppers lose their heat if the weather is too cool. In cool years, yields and quality may be reduced.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Soil: Maddock sandy loam and Embden loam; pH=8.2; 3.0% organic matter; soil-P and soil-K were very high; soil-S was low.
Previous crop: 1998 - canola; 1997 - edibile bean; 1996 - edibile bean.
Seedbed preparation: Disked on 26 October 1998. Disked on April 26 and June 2. Field cultivated twice on June 2 to incorporate herbicide.
Planting: Peppers were seeded in the greenhouse on April 9. Plants were hand transplanted to the field on June 2. Planting pattern was paired rows (12 inches between rows) on 4 ft centers. In-row spacing was 18 inches within a single row, which put a plant every 9 inches for the paired rows. Each plant received 1 pint of fertilizer solution (1 gal 10-34-0 in 100 gal of water) when it was transplanted. Peppers were irrigated immediately after planting.
Plots: Plots were 17 ft long by 4 ft (one paired row) wide. There were 4 reps.
Fertilizer: On April 7, broadcast 15 lbs N/acre and 75 lbs P2O5/acre as 10-50-0, 18 lbs N/acre and 20 lbs S/acre as 21-0-0-24, and 99 lbs K20/acre as 0-0-60. Sprayed 50 lbs N/acre as 28-0-0 on June 2 and side dressed 40 lbs of N/acre as urea on July 30.
Irrigation: Overhead sprinkler irrigation as needed.
Pest control: Weeds were controlled by Treflan (1 pt/acre on June 2), rototilling between rows, and hand weeding. No disease or insect control was required.
Harvest: Harvested hot peppers 7 times and sweet peppers 6 times from Aug 6 to Sept 24.

RESULTS

Sweet Peppers

Rpp 6110-VP produced the highest yield of US fancy + US #1 peppers. Paladin, King Arthur, and Sentry also had high yields. Paladin, Colossal, King Arthur, Lafayette, Rpp 6110-VP, and Sentry were the highest in quality. Paladin and King Arthur produced the largest fruits, fruits with the thickest walls, and were the earliest hybrids. Rpp 6110-VP was a good, later maturing hybrid.

Hot Peppers

Only one hot pepper, Summer Heat 5000, was tested. It is a jalapeño type pepper. It was earlier and produced a higher US fancy + US #1 yield than any of the sweet peppers. It also had good quality.

Fruit shape - 1 is blocky; 2 is elongated; 3 is tapered; 4 is jalapeño

Outside color - 1 to 3 is light to dark yellow; 4 is yellow green; 5 to 7 is light to dark green.

§Uniformity - The higher the number the more uniform.

††Overall score - Overall score includes appearance but not yield. The higher the number the better the pepper.

The hot pepper was not included in the statistical analysis.
