PASTE TOMATO PERFORMANCE TRIAL, 1997

Richard Greenland, Leonard Besemann and Heidi Kerlin

Tomatoes grow well in southern North Dakota. Yield and quality may be reduced in cool years. In most years, yield and quality compare very favorably with other areas in the United States.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Soil: Embden sandy loam; pH=7; 2.8% organic matter; soil-P was high; soil-K was high; soil-S was low.
Previous crop: 1996 - oriental vegetables; 1995 - muskmelons, soybeans; 1994 - peppers.
Seedbed preparation: Disked on May 9. Multiweeded (field cultivated) four times on June 11 to incorporate herbicides and to smooth seedbed.
Planting: Tomatoes were seeded in the greenhouse on April 15. Plants were machine transplanted on June 11. Rows were spaced 4 feet apart. In-row spacing was 1 ft. As it was planted, each plant received one pint of fertilizer solution (1 gal 10-34-0 in 100 gal of water). Tomatoes were not staked.
Plots: Plots were 17 ft long by 4 ft (one row) wide.
Fertilizer: On April 23, broadcast 14 lbs N/acre and 70 lbs P2O5/acre as 10-50-0, 16 lbs N/acre and 19 lbs S/acre as 21-0-0-24, and 94 lbs K20/acre as 0-0-60. Sprayed 50 lbs N/acre as 28-0-0 on May 6. Fertigated 50 lbs N/acre as 28-0-0 through the drip irrigation system on July 22.
Irrigation: Surface drip irrigation as needed.
Pest control: Weeds were controlled by Tillam and Treflan (3 qt/acre and 1 pt/acre on June 11 - the Tillam was applied and incorporated 4 inches deep then Treflan was applied and incorporated 2 inches deep), rimsulfuron (0.25 oz/acre on July 15), and by hand weeding. We applied Bravo (1.5 oz/acre on July 21 and Aug 5), Manzate (2 lbs/acre on July 28), and Dithane (2.2 qt/acre on Aug 20) for blight control. We applied Asana (6 oz/acre on July 22, July 29, Aug 5, and Aug 21) for insect control.
Harvest: Harvested in a single destructive harvest from Sept 19 to Sept 22.

RESULTS

Yields were down this year due to late planting. V.104, Hybrid 880, and Viva Italia were some of the earlier hybrids that had good yields. Supra was a later hybrid with high yields.
