PEPPER HYBRID PERFORMANCE TRIAL,1997

Richard Greenland, Leonard Besemann, and Heidi Kerlin

Hot peppers generally grow surprising well in southern North Dakota, although late in the season some peppers lose their heat if the weather is too cool. In cool years, yields and quality may be reduced.

Results summary

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Soil: Hecla sandy loam and Embden sandy loam; pH=7.2; 2.5% organic matter; soil-P and soil-K were high; soil-S was medium.
Previous crop: 1996 - cabbage; 1995 - peppers and oriental vegetables; 1994 - cucumber and tomato.
Seedbed preparation: Disked on May 9. Multiweeded twice on June 11 to incorporate herbicide.
Planting: Peppers were seeded in the greenhouse on March 21 (Habanero) or April 15 (all others). Plants were mechanically or hand transplanted on June 23 and June 24. Planting pattern was paired rows (12 inches between them) on 4 ft centers. In-row spacing was 18 inches within a single row, which put a plant every 9 inches for the paired rows. As it was planted, each plant received ½ pint of fertilizer solution (1 gal 10-34-0 in 100 gal of water).
Plots: Plots were 17 ft long by 4 ft (one double row) wide. There were 4 reps.
Fertilizer: On April 23, broadcast 14 lbs N/acre and 70 lbs P2O5/acre as 10-50-0, 16 lbs N/acre and 19 lbs S/acre as 21-0-0-24, and 94 lbs K20/acre as 0-0-60. Sprayed 50 lbs of N/acre as 28-0-0 on May 6. Side dressed 50 lbs N/acre as 28-0-0 through the drip system on July 22.
Irrigation: Surface drip irrigation as needed.
Pest control: Weeds were controlled by Treflan (1 pt/acre on June 11), rototilling, and by hand weeding.
Harvest: Harvested 6 times from Aug 13 to Sept 18.

RESULTS

Giant Jalapeño, White Fire, Sierra Fuego, Hercules, Super Hungarian Hot, Sizzler and Anaheim TMR23 were the best peppers in the trial. The season is too short for Habanero and it did poorly.
