ORIENTAL VEGETABLE PERFORMANCE TRIAL

Richard Greenland

Oriental vegetables such as daikon radish, bok choy (also called pak choi), and baby bok choy grow well in North Dakota. In past years napa cabbage did not form a good head.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Soil: Maddock sandy loam; pH=7.4; 2.1 % organic matter; soil-P and soil-K were high; soil-S was very low.
Previous crop: 1996 - potato; 1995 - field corn; 1994 - soybeans.
Seedbed preparation: Disked on May 2; Multiweeded (field cultivated) once on May 5 and twice on July 11.
Planting: Direct seeded with a Stanhay vegetable planter. Daikon radish and pak choi were planted on July 14 and napa cabbage on July 16. Pak choi and napa cabbage were spaced 7.5 inches apart in 16-inch rows, then thinned to 15 inches apart in the row. Daikon radishes were spaced 4 inches apart in 16-inch rows and later thinned to 8 inches apart in the row. Baby bok choy was planted 7.5 inches apart in 8-inch rows. It was not thinned. Seeds were placed about ½ inch deep into a flat, fine seedbed.
Plots: Plots were 17 ft long by 6 ft wide. There were four 16-inch rows/bed, except Mei Qing Choi which had seven 8-inch rows/bed. There were 4 reps.
Fertilizer: On April 23, broadcast 14 lbs N/acre and 70 lbs P2O5/acre as 10-50-0, 16 lbs N/acre and 19 lbs S/acre as 21-0-0-24, and 94 lbs K20/acre as 0-0-60. On May 5 sprayed 50 lbs N/acre as 28-0-0. Fertigated 52 lbs N/acre as 28-0-0 on July 15.
Irrigation: Overhead sprinkler irrigation as needed.
Pest control: Sprayed Lentagran (2 lbs/acre on August 4) and hand weeded to control weeds. Sprayed Asana (6 oz/acre on July 22) and DiPel (1 lb/acre on August 21 and 28) to control cabbage worm and cabbage looper.
Harvest: Harvested Baby bok choi on August 22. Daikon radish and pak choi on September 16. Napa cabbage did not form good heads and was not harvested.

RESULTS

All the radish and pak choi varieties performed well, despite the late planting. The higher number of radishes (and smaller size) of April Cross was probably due to smaller seed which caused it to plant at a higher rate. Last year, when planted at about the same density as Omny, April Cross was similar in size to Omny.
