PUMPKIN VARIETY PERFORMANCE TRIAL, 1996

Richard G Greenland and Leonard Besemann

Pumpkins grow well in North Dakota. Early maturing pumpkins are usually best. This replicated trial had 5 pumpkin varieties.

Results summary

Table 51. Fruit characteristics.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Soil: Egeland loam and Maddock sandy loam; pH=7.4; 2.3% organic matter; soil-K was very high; soil-P was high; soil-S was very low.
Previous crops: 1995 - carrot; 1994 - sweet corn; 1993 - broccoli.
Seedbed preparation: Disked on May 3. Multiweeded (field cultivated) on May 20 to smooth seedbed.
Planting: Seeds planted 1 ft apart in rows 8 ft apart on May 21. On June 28 thinned to an in-row spacing of one plant every 3 ft.
Plots: Plots were 20 ft long by 8 ft (one row) wide.
Fertilizer: On April 17, broadcast 14 lbs N/acre and 70 lbs P2O5/acre as 10-50-0, 16 lbs N/acre and 19 lbs S/acre as 21-0-0-24, and 94 lbs K20/acre as 0-0-60. On May 3 broadcast 50 lbs N/acre as 28-0-0. Side dressed 70 lbs N/acre as urea on June 19.
Irrigation: Overhead sprinkler irrigation as needed.
Pest control: Weeds were controlled by a stale seedbed, and by hand weeding. Chemigated Asana (8 oz/acre on July 12 and July 31) to control cucumber beetles.
Harvest: Hand harvested Sept. 30 to Oct. 3.

RESULTS

We had trouble with germination and emergence for Baby Bear this year so yields were down, but the quality was good. This is the first time we've had a problem with Baby Bear. Rocket and Tom Fox did well again this year. Rouge Vif D'Etampes is a processing type pumpkin.

2Handle (or stem) - 1 to 5; the longer and thicker the handle in relation to the size of the pumpkin, the higher the score.

3Color - The higher the number, the darker the color; 3=medium orange, 4=dark orange, 5=red orange.

4Shape - 1=short; 2=medium short; 3=round; 4=medium tall; 5=tall.
