ORIENTAL VEGETABLE WEED CONTROL STUDY, 1996

Richard G Greenland

Oriental vegetable production is new in North Dakota. We need more information on weed control with our weeds and conditions. Since the oriental vegetables used in this study are related to cabbage, we experimented with herbicides labeled on cabbage. Some of these chemicals are not labeled for these oriental vegetables and must not be used commercially until they are labeled.

MATERIALS AND METHODS
Soil: Embden sandy loam; pH=6.9; 3.0% organic matter; soil-P was high; soil-K was medium; soil-S was very low.
Previous crops: 1995 - muskmelon; 1994 - pepper; 1993 - field corn.
Seedbed preparation: Disked on April 22. Multiweeded (field cultivated) on April 22 to incorporate fertilizer. Multiweeded twice on April 29 to incorporate herbicide treatments.
Planting: Direct seeded on April 30 with a Stanhay vegetable planter in 16 inch rows. Seeds were placed about 3/4 inch deep into a flat, fine seedbed.
Plots: Plots were 17 ft long by 6 ft wide and arranged on 9 ft centers (giving a 3-ft check strip between plots). The study had 4 reps.
Fertilizer: On April 17, broadcast 14 lbs N/acre and 70 lbs P2O5/acre as 10-50-0, 16 lbs N/acre and 19 lbs S/acre as 21-0-0-24, and 94 lbs K20/acre as 0-0-60. Sprayed 35 lbs N/acre as 28-0-0 on April 22.
Irrigation: Surface drip irrigation as needed.
Pest Control: Weed control treatments were the first seven treatments listed in table 55. Sevin (1.5 pts/acre on May 15 and May 29) controlled flea beetles. Asana (8 oz/acre on July 10) controlled cabbage looper and cabbage worm.
Harvest: Daikon radishes were hand harvested on June 28, pak choi and napa cabbage were harvested July 9. We harvested broccoli July 19 and July 30.

RESULTS

A combination of Treflan, Dacthal, and Lentagran controlled weeds the best. Leaf burning of bok choy by Lentagran eventually disappeared but reduced yields. The herbicides did not cause any other crop injury. Devrinol did not control any weeds.
