Ward, Sargent County Teams Win 4-H Crop Judging Contest

Several youth bring home honors from the North Dakota State 4-H Crop Judging Contest.

The Ward County 4-H crop judging team placed first in the senior division of the North Dakota State 4-H Crop Judging Contest in Valley City on March 16.

The contest normally is held in conjunction with the North Dakota Winter Show but was rescheduled due to a blizzard on March 9.

Team members are Aubrey Lemer of Berthold, and Matthew Schauer and Thomas Schauer of Carpio. The Ward County team is coached by Kelly Finke and Bob Finken. Lemer placed first individually in the senior 4-H contest with a score of 941 points out of a possible 1,000.

The Mountrail/Walsh County team placed second. Team members are Andrew Haakenson of Parshall, Lilly Bina of Fordville and Justin Klose of Hoople. Coaches are Roger Christenson and Brad Brummond.

The Sargent County team place first in the junior division of the state contest. Team members are Olivia Throener and James Throener of Cogswell, and Jami Bopp and Michael Hoistad of Forman. Brianna McLaen coached the team.

The Mountrail/Sheridan junior team placed second. Team members are Alyssa Haakenson and Brenden Haakenson of Parshall, and Greg Felchle and Dawson Felchle of Denhoff. Coaches are Roger Christenson and Nicole Wardner.

The third-place junior division team of Kyle Johnson and Kelsey Johnson of Kensal and Abigail Lee of Carrington represented Foster County. The team is coached by Joel Lemer and Bruce Bachmeier. Kyle Johnson placed first individually in the junior contest, with a score of 745 points out of a possible 800.

The junior crop judging contest consists of crop seed pan classes, identification of plants and seeds, market factors of wheat, grain grading, and identification of insects and equipment. The senior contest consists of those topics plus crop disorders.

The 4-H crop judging contest is conducted with support and sponsorship from the North Dakota 4-H Foundation, North Dakota Winter Show, North Dakota Crop Improvement and Seed Association, and Valley City Lions Club. The Valley City Eagles Club hosted the event.
