Child/teen and adult mental and behavioral health issues will be the focus of a workshop that North Dakota State University Extension and Prairie St. John’s, a psychiatric hospital in Fargo, are teaming up to hold from 9 a.m. to noon March 28.
The workshop will be offered through North Dakota’s Interactive Video Network from 19 sites across the state.
One session will be on the root function of behavior and strategies for working with difficult behavior. During this youth-focused session, the presenter will describe common childhood mental health diagnoses, such as depression, anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder. Participants also will learn about practical interventions for behavior issues, such as building relationships, consistency and logical consequences.
The second session is titled “Drawing the Line From Trauma to Addiction.” In this adult-focused session, the presenter will describe the association between an adverse childhood experience (ACE) score and its effects on health, behavior and life potential. Participants also will learn how to identify the relationship between illicit drug use and the 10 ACE categories, and how to apply ACE scores to substance misuse/abuse prevention.
The presenters are a child and adolescent therapist and licensed addiction counselor at Prairie St. John’s.
