4-H Youth Conference has Leadership Focus

Youth will develop leadership skills, learn about career paths, and form partnerships and friendships.

Nearly 100 youth will be on the North Dakota State University campus in Fargo on June 18-21 for the 2018 Extension Youth Conference.

The conference is open to any young person who has completed seventh through 12th grade. Participants do not need to be a 4-H member to attend.

“The Extension Youth Conference energizes North Dakota youth and empowers them with the tools necessary to develop leadership skills, learn about career paths, and form partnerships and friendships with youth from diverse backgrounds, volunteers, Extension staff and communities,” says Sue Quamme, a 4-H youth development specialist in NDSU Extension’s Center for 4-H Youth Development. She helps organize the conference.

The registration deadline is June 4. Quamme encourages youth to register soon because space is filling fast.

The 2018 conference is focused on North Dakota leaders. The theme is “Dive Into Leadership.” The program features two keynote speakers: Cara Mund, who is Miss America, and Shelly Fink, a technical sergeant with the North Dakota National Guard.

Mund, of Bismarck, is an Ivy League honors graduate from Brown University who is headed to law school. In 2011, President Barack Obama recognized her for her charitable efforts.

Fink, a graduate of NDSU, is a combat veteran and former 4-H Ambassador.

During the conference, youth also will participate in College Night and a service project, attend breakout sessions, and get dressed up for a banquet and dance.

The registration fee is $225. That includes all meals from Monday evening through Thursday lunch, overnight housing, an event T-shirt and a photograph of all the attending delegates.

Youth who want more information or are interested in attending the conference should contact their local NDSU Extension office or the Center for 4-H Youth Development at 701-231-7251 or by email at NDSU.4-H@ndsu.edu. Youth in 4-H should register through 4hOnline (https://www.ndsu.edu/4h/4honline_enrollment_and_registration).
