Teams from several counties took top honors at the 4-H Archery Indoor Championships held recently in Edgeley.

This event is the culmination of five indoor matches across North Dakota beginning in Bismarck in January. Other matches were held in Watford City, Minot, Cando and West Fargo. Youth must attend at least two of these district matches to participate in the championships. The best two district scores and the score at the championships place the archers and teams.

Archers from 8 to 18 years old competed in three age divisions and two bow divisions: barebow and freestyle.

Bare bow divisions cannot use a sight or release. Archers shoot six sets of five arrows at a 10-ring, 80-centimeter (cm) target at a distance of 15 yards. The contest for barebow is the same for all ages.

The Dickey County team of Landon Schmidt, Madeline Thorpe and Drew Thorpe took first place in beginner barebow. Individual winners were:

• First - Camden Weist, McIntosh County, with a cumulative score of 724 out of a possible 900 points
• Second - Njos Zakai, Slope County, with a score of 671
• Third - Ava Dunlop, Burleigh County, with a score of 658
• Fourth - Schmidt, with a score of 651
• Fifth - Elli Loyd, LaMoure County, with a score of 622

The combined Steele/Traill County team of Brady Sand, MacKenzie Motter, Devin Fulton and Emma Gullicks captured first in the junior barebow division. Individual winners were:

• First - Sand, with a score of 838
• Second - Alle Boyer, LaMoure County, with a score of 804
• Third - Motter, with a score of 786
• Fourth - Wyatt Dunlop, Rolette County, with a score of 784
• Fifth - Kennedy Gross, McIntosh County, with a score of 775

Another Steele/Traill County team of Jack Thompson, Hayden Thompson and Trevor Thompson finished first in the senior barebow division. Individual winners were:

• First - Alicia Biewer, Richland County, with a score of 837
• Second - Will Peckham, Stutsman County, with a score of 831
• Third - Jack Thompson, with a score of 829
• Fourth - Brennan Weiderrich, LaMoure County, with a score of 804
• Fifth - Hayden Thompson, with a score of 801

Archers participating in the freestyle unlimited match can use sights and a release. Beginner and junior age archers shoot six sets of five arrows. The target is a National Field Archery Association indoor 20-cm, two-ring, five-spot target or a 40-cm, five-ring, single-spot target, with the archer having a choice.

The target distance is 15 yards for beginner and junior divisions. The senior division contest requires 12 sets of five arrows at a target distance of 20 yards.

The Morton County team of Ellie Bargmann, Anna Bargmann and Preston Miller placed first in beginner freestyle. Individual winners were:

• First - Jaxon Heilman, Pierce County, with a cumulative score of 403 out of 450 possible points
• Second - Collin Loeks, Mountrail County, with a score of 391
• Third - Lucas Wentz, Pierce County, with a score of 389
• Fourth - Layne Korgel, Ward County, with a score of 373
• Fifth - Drew Thorpe, Dickey County, with a score of 335

The Morton County team of Cutter Craig, Caden Craig and Kendra Boehm finished first in junior freestyle. Individual winners were:

• First - Brady Sand, Steele/Traill County, with a cumulative score of 449 (this is only one point from a perfect season)
• Second - MacKenzie Thorpe, Dickey County, with a score of 429
• Third - Cutter Craig, with a score of 428
• Fourth - Caden Craig, with a score of 426
• Fifth - Boehm, with a score of 413

The top team in senior freestyle consisted of Benjamin Niemuth, Jenna Thompson, Shianne Boehm and Dominique Braun from Morton County. Individual winners were:

• First - Ethan Myers, Ward County, with a cumulative score of 866 out of a possible 900 points
• Second - Layrn Dees, Williams County, with a score of 839
• Third - Niemuth, with a score of 833
• Fourth - Brayden Obritsch, McKenzie County, with a score of 828
• Fifth - Tyler Brusseau, Stark County, with a score of 825

Winners in the masters division were:

• First - Chris Morstad, Ramsey County, with a cumulative score of 894 out of 900 points
• Second - Tom Mitchell, Pembina County, with a score of 883
• Third - Kail Larsen, Stark County, with a score of 880
• Fourth - Will Peckham, Stutsman County, with a score of 879
• Fifth - Landon Sprague, Stutsman County, with a score of 866.
