N.D. Extension Association of Family and Consumer Sciences Honors Farmers Union

The North Dakota Farmers Union is recognized for its support of Extension nutrition, food safety and health programs.

The North Dakota Farmers Union is the 2017 Friend of the North Dakota Extension Association of Family and Consumer Sciences.

The North Dakota Farmers Union (NDFU) received the award during the North Dakota State University Extension Service/Research Extension Center fall conference held Oct. 24-27 in Fargo.

The NDFU has partnered with NDSU Extension on nutrition, food safety and health programs. For example, the NDFU provided funding for the “Eat Smart. Play Hard. Together” project that provides multisession lessons in elementary classrooms throughout North Dakota.

It also provided blue spatulas to add to the “cooking kits” that children receive after participating in the “On the Move to Better Health Cooking School” held throughout North Dakota. In addition, the NDFU provided “Founding Fathers” cookbooks, which are used to promote “The Family Table,” an Extension initiative that encourages families to eat together more often.

The NDFU has five restaurants that serve and educate 40,000 people per week with direct-sourced food from family farms and ranches, and farmer-owned cooperatives and processing plants. The organization shares Extension’s mission in reaching youth and adults with information to inform them of the origin of their food, which helps create awareness and support for rural America.
