4-H Youth Conference Focusing on Leadership

This year’s conference runs from June 19 to 22.

Leadership development is the focus of this year’s Extension Youth Conference, which will be held June 19-22 at North Dakota State University in Fargo.

The conference is open to any young person who has completed seventh through 12th grade. Participants do not need to be a 4-H member to attend.

“Building a Foundation of Leadership” is the theme of the conference. The event features a concert by Tigirlily; a keynote address from Katie Pinke, who has experience with agriculture and marketing, and is general manager and publisher at AgWeek; team/leadership building with the North Dakota National Guard; and leadership development with NDSU professionals.

Participants also will take career and interest tours, participate in a service project, attend a banquet and dance, make new friends and catch up with old friends.

“The conference energizes North Dakota youth and empowers them with the tools necessary to develop leadership skills, learn about career paths, and form partnerships and friendships with youth from diverse backgrounds, volunteers, Extension staff and communities,” says Sue Quamme, a 4-H youth development specialist in the NDSU Extension Service’s Center for 4-H Youth Development.

Nearly 100 participants from throughout North Dakota attend the annual event.

“It is an amazing conference that gives youth opportunities to grow as leaders, meet lifelong friends and have some fun,” says Holly Johnson, a North Dakota 4-H Ambassador. “EYC offers motivational speakers, service learning opportunities, engaging workshops and more! I would highly encourage all youth who are able to attend EYC at least once.”

She adds that the conference played a huge role in her becoming a 4-H Ambassador. 4-H Ambassadors are a group of young adults who coordinate activities, including the Extension Youth Conference, workshops, training sessions and regional events, that teach youth and adults about leadership, team work and citizenship.

The registration deadline for the 2017 conference is June 10. The fee is $225. That includes all meals from Monday evening through Thursday lunch, overnight housing, an event T-shirt and a photograph of all the attending delegates.

Youth who want more information or are interested in attending the conference should contact their county office of the NDSU Extension Service or the Center for 4-H Youth Development at 701-231-7251 or by email at NDSU.4-H@ndsu.edu. Youth in 4-H should register through https://nd.4honline.com.
