2007 NDSU Weed Control Guide Available

It's time to order the 2007 NDSU Weed Control Guide.

It's time to order the 2007 version of the annual NDSU North Dakota Weed Control Guide.

The guide is based on federal and state herbicide labels, research at North Dakota Research Extension Centers and other information from the North Dakota Department of Agriculture, according to Richard Zollinger, North Dakota State University Extension Service weed specialist.

The guide is available from NDSU Extension Service county offices, NDSU Agriculture Communication at (701) 231-7882 or on the Web at http://www.ag.ndsu.nodak.edu/weeds/. The first copy is free, but there is a $2.50 shipping and handling fee. Additional copies are 75 cents each.

The guide has several sections, including:

  • Types of herbicides available by crop
  • Special weed problems such as knapweed, yellow starthistle or saltcedar
  • A general information section for issues such as soil testing, adjuvants and sprayer cleaning
  • Herbicide carryover to the next year
  • Herbicide resistant weeds
  • Rotation restrictions for crops grown in North Dakota
  • Restrictions on grazing, feeding or haying of crops treated with herbicides
  • An approximate retail price list of herbicides and adjuvants for 2007

""The guide has an easy-to-follow format that should help producers with sometimes difficult herbicide application decisions,"" Zollinger says. ""The guide also lists other publications that are available to provide even more specific information."

The information in the guide only applies to North Dakota, according to Zollinger.

""That's because many herbicide uses are allowed only by supplemental or specific labeling for North Dakota,"" he says. ""Those using the supplemental or specific labeling are required to have the labeling in their possession at the time of application."

The guide provides an update on new or discontinued herbicides, possible Section 18 registrations and IR-4 projects for the year.

Other NDSU research or Extension contributors to the weed guide include Michael Christoffers, Alan Dexter, Greg Endres, Terry Gregoire, Kirk Howatt, Brian Jenks, Rod Lym, Calvin Messersmith, Andrew Thostenson and Harlene Hatterman-Valenti.
