Scott Walden has been named director of animal resources and attending veterinarian at North Dakota State University.

In his new position, Walden will oversee the health and welfare of all animals used in university research and teaching. He also is responsible for oversight of training and education programs for animal care and research staff, as well as consulting with university researchers, ensuring projects meet state and federal regulations.

“I am delighted that Dr. Walden has accepted this important position at NDSU and I am pleased that we are able to offer this greater level of support to our animal researchers,” said NDSU President Joseph Chapman. “North Dakota State University cannot be a great land-grant university without a great animal research program.”

Walden previously served as assistant director of the Department of Research Animal Resources at the University of Minnesota. His experience includes laboratory medicine, regulatory oversight and the management of animal facilities. He also previously served as on-site veterinarian for the University of Minnesota Veterinary Farm in Rosemount, Minn., and as manager for the University of Minnesota Hormel Institute, Austin, Minn. In addition, Walden served as attending veterinarian for the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee at St. Thomas University, St. Paul, Minn.

He was an adjunct instructor for Argosy University, Eagan, Minn., and a consulting veterinarian for Carlton College, Northfield, Minn. His teaching experience includes classes on lab and exotic animals, radiology and parasitology. From 1996 to 1998, he served as clinical veterinarian at the Coulston Foundation, Alamogordo, N.M.

Walden received his bachelor’s degree in biology from Mayville State University and his doctor of veterinary medicine from Iowa State University, Ames, where he also served as an animal caretaker and instructor in animal physiology and husbandry in a laboratory environment. His experience includes oversight and veterinary care for a variety of animal species.
