NDSU School of Food Systems Director Appointed

Deland J. Myers has been appointed director of the new School of Food Systems in North Dakota State University’s College of Agriculture, Food Systems and Natural Resources.

Deland J. Myers, professor of food science and human nutrition at Iowa State University, Ames, has been appointed director of the new School of Food Systems in North Dakota State University’s College of Agriculture, Food Systems and Natural Resources. Myers also will serve as director of the Great Plains Institute of Food Safety. The appointment is effective Aug. 31.

“Dr. Myers’ major responsibility will be to provide vision, leadership and momentum to the formation of the School of Food Systems,” explained Kenneth Grafton, dean of agriculture, food systems and natural resources and director of the North Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station. “The school will have far-reaching implications on both agricultural research and business development in the sate. As director, he will have the opportunity to create and lead teaching, research and outreach programs that will benefit students, stakeholders and industries across the state and nation.”

Myers said, “The School of Food Systems will develop education and outreach programs that will focus on all aspects of the food processing industry. The strength of NDSU in the areas of cereal and food sciences, food safety and oilseed processing provides a strong foundation to build a school that will develop programs that will not only have an impact in North Dakota and the Great Plains region, but nationally and internationally as well.”

Myers joined the ISU faculty in 1989, and was named a full professor in 2003. His honors include the Archer Daniels Midland Best Paper Award, the American Oil Chemists’ Outstanding Paper Presentation Award, Agriculture College Teacher of the Year and Thomas Thielen Student Affairs Service Award. His vita lists 32 journal articles, four book chapters and 74 presentation abstracts. He has two patents on the use of soy protein as a wood adhesive. He is known for his research in the area of finding nonfood uses for cereal and legume proteins and has been invited to numerous national and international conferences to speak on the topic.

Myers is a member of Gamma Sigma Delta National Honor Society for Agriculture, Institute of Food Technologists, American Oil Chemists’ Society, Sigma Xi and Golden Key Nation Honorary Society. He earned a bachelor’s degree at the University of Missouri-Kansas City, and a master’s degree and doctorate in food technology from Iowa State University.

Before joining the ISU faculty, he was a product development scientist at The Pillsbury Co., Minneapolis.

His wife, Eveadean M. Myers, has been appointed to lead NDSU’s Office of Equity and Diversity and serve as NDSU’s chief diversity officer.
