March 24th, 2019 4-H Leader's Meeting

Nelson County 4-H Leader’s Meeting

Official Minutes
Nelson County Courthouse
March 24th, 2019

Meeting was called to order at 1:00 p.m. Leaders present: Margaret Estvold (Lakota Cloverleaves), DeAnn Galde (Bison Bunch), Esther Donohue (Dakota Eagles). Katelyn Hain was present from the Extension Office. Estvold lead the meeting. Minutes were taken by Galde.

Estvold called the meeting to order at 1 p.m. Estvold added proxy bidder discussion to the agenda. Galde moved and Donohue 2nd to approve agenda. Motion carried.

Roll call: What are you looking forward to this summer? Estvold- more fishing, Donohue & Hain- going outside, Galde- working on farm yard.

Minutes were reviewed. Galde moved and Donohue 2nd to approve minutes. Motion carried.

Treasurer’s report of $7,370.93 was reviewed. Hain said some donations came in late for some of the premiums last year. Galde moved and Donohue 2nd to approve minutes. Motion carried.

Old and New Business:
Fair Entry Update: Livestock has to be registered early. Registration will be on-line. Hain did a quick tutorial of how to register projects. We will still be doing paper registration for this year also.

Website: Hain is trying to get all record books on the website, along with curriculum, etc and will be keeping it updated. Let her know if there is anything that should be posted on the website.

YQCA: Training will be April 19th at 10 a.m. There is a $3 charge at the extension office or you can take it online for $12. Clover buds are exempt. It is a one-hour training. Register ASAP. Members must complete the training if they want to show livestock at the county fair.

Livestock Set Up: Animal Pens- Extension will set up a work date to get stuff moved out of the livestock building. Donohue asked about getting something to show rabbits on. Hain suggested we could maybe build a table. Estvold asked about purchasing cages. Hain will look into it. Discussed meeting one evening in June to move stuff out of the building. Hain will ask the Heritage Society if it is ok to have the animals up by the main street building.

Achievement Day Supplement: Changes to achievement day supplement were discussed. Hain said the baby beef category in the Nelson County supplement is a duplication from the state fair book. Galde moved, Donohue 2nd to remove baby beef category (#14 on page 5). Motion carried. Hain asked if leaders wanted to limit the number of livestock a 4-H member can exhibit. Galde said we should bring it to our 4-H parents and see what they think. Galde mentioned that a category like Poultry is a large category including ducks, geese, chickens, pigeons, etc. and it wouldn’t be fair to a member that raised a variety of birds to only be able to show 1 or 2. It was discussed that all forms must be turned in at registration time, such as proof of vaccination, etc. There was discussion on each member being able to bring one blue through the premium sale if a member does not get a grand or reserve. There was discussion on whether or not a member can go through the premium sale for showmanship AND grand or reserve. Galde motioned to table the premium sale discussion until the next meeting. Donohue 2nd. Motion carried.

Achievement Day Schedule: Estvold will ask Lakota Close Up to stay a half our past the end of judging. Check in of quilts will be from 4:30 to 7 p.m. on Thursday night. Check in of flowers, vegetables and grain will be 8 to 10 a.m. on Friday. It was suggested that there be something written in the letter to exhibitors, flyers or articles saying they should be available from 11 to 12 to be with their exhibits. Donohue will contact the Tattered Attic, Horse Lessons and Dance Class in McVille about having displays. Kristen will contact Game & Fish and Turtle River. Katelyn will contact McVille Library. Estvold said she still has some past booth information she can put out, ie. Canola Growers, etc. Galde will contact USDA about having soils tunnel and animal furs again.

Meat Raffle: Galde will ask Alan Anderson if he still has pigs. If he doesn’t, Estvold will ask the Nelson County Pig Cooperative to donate one. Tickets will be $5 again.
Leader’s Banquet: Next Sunday, March 31st at 5 p.m. in Devils Lake at Charras & Tequila.
Katelyn said she hadn’t heard back from Sheri Pederson regarding the banner we discussed last month.

Proxy Bidders: Estvold will ask the same ladies to come and bid. Galde mentioned having some bidders from the southern part of the county as well.

Hain said Ramsey County 4-H has purchased cotton candy, hot dog and popcorn machines. Maybe our county would like to purchase one or more of these machines and use them to fundraise.

Next meeting will be April 19th after the YQCA training at approximately 11:00 a.m.
Galde motioned to adjourn. Donohue 2nd. Motion carried.
