Practice Problems
- A complaint regarding uncontrolled leafy spurge and canada thistle on an empty lot on the west edge of Woburn was received by a weed board member. He has asked you, the weed officer to check it out. You drive to the lot and find both leafy spurge and canada thistle in bloom. A walk across the lot and around the perimeter reveals a level surface with no apparent obstruction to mowing except tall grass and weeds which would make it difficult. There are rows of tomato plants adjoining the lot on both the east and west sides. A check on ownership indicates the taxes are two years past due and the owner lives in Bellvue, MD. What do you do?
Answers:
Scenario 1. Contact the owner and explain the situation regarding the weeds and his legal requirement to control them. You suggest that keeping the lot mowed regularly would be one good solution which would not have the problem of possible spray drift onto the sensitive plants on adjoining lots. You provide him with the names, addresses and phone numbers of three landscaping contractors in the area who will do that type of maintenance.
Scenario 2. Contact the owner and explain the situation regarding the weeds and his legal requirement to control them. You suggest that keeping the lot mowed regularly would be one good solution which would not have the problem of possible spray drift onto the sensitive plants on adjoining lots. The owner says he can't afford to hire that done and asks for any suggestions you may have. You offer to speak to the adjoining lot owners to see if one of them will do it in exchange for using the lot for parking and storage.
