Water Essential for Cattle in High Heat

When temperatures soar, making sure cattle have enough water is critical. During hot weather, cattle can drink up to 20 or more gallons a day.  It also is important for ranchers to check ponds and tanks for green or blue-green algae because certain types of algae can be fatal to livestock. Water testing should be conducted to ensure optimum productivity of your herd or flock.

Impacts of Flooding on Crop Development

The recent warm weather has accentuated the adverse effects of waterlogging on any emerged crops. Generally, the oxygen levels in saturated soils reach a point that is harmful to plant growth after 48 to 96 hours. In an effort to survive, tissues growing under reduced oxygen levels use alternate metabolic pathways that produce byproducts that can be toxic at elevated levels. Waterlogged conditions also reduce root growth and can predispose the plant to root rots, so the results of excess moisture may not be known until late in the season.

Timing of Fungicides for Scab Control in Wheat and Barley

Some winter wheat is now approaching the growth stage that is most sensitive to scab infection. Also, the earliest planted spring wheat and barley fields are beginning to head out. Environmental conditions in the next few weeks will play a significant role in determining if scab will be problematic this year. The small grains disease forecasting model is an excellent resource in determining the risk for scab development. If conditions are conducive for scab development, recommended fungicides can be effective in reducing scab development, particularly if applied at the appropriate stage of development.

Scout for Tan Spot

Tan Spot

Tan spot has been found in several areas of the state. Tan spot is a fungal disease that infects winter and spring wheat in all counties of North Dakota. The greatest likelihood of a yield loss occurs when spring rains favor disease development with temperatures above 50 F, a susceptible or moderately susceptible variety is planted and the crop is planted into wheat residue. The early infections are small tan to brown spots surrounded by yellow halos. The NDSU small-grain disease forecasting system also has information for the risk of tan spot and other leaf spot infections.

Final Planting Dates for Multiperil Crop Insurance

If fields are too wet to plant on or after the final planting date, producers have the option to take prevented planting on those fields and accept prevented planted insurance coverage. If the decision is to take prevented planting, the producer must notify his/her insurance provider within 72 hours of making that decision.

Managing Saline Soils

Saline Soil

Saline soils have salt levels high enough that crop yields begin to suffer or cropping is impractical. Several factors contribute to the development of saline soils. A high water table is a prime requirement. Recognizing how and why salts accumulate is the first step in farming profitably on land interspersed with saline soils. Preventing further encroachment of salinity and addressing remediation strategies are other steps.

Buying Ground Beef

When cattle are processed into cuts, such as sirloin steaks or filet mignon, the small pieces left over can be ground up to be sold as ground beef. Will these trimmings make a good hamburger or is it better to buy ground beef that has been ground from whole muscle? You might be surprised at the answer.
