Establish Ground Rule

Many boards, councils and committees have taken time to brainstorm a list of rules that members would like to live by at their meetings. By asking the group to determine their ground rules they can help keep everyone on task during the meeting. Here are some suggested ground rules:

  • Start and stop meetings on time
  • Follow the agreed-upon agenda
  • Help keep discussion on track by making relevant comments
  • Share disagreements with each other (don’t have meetings after the meeting)
  • Speak freely, but don’t monopolize the conversation
  • Speak for yourself, not for others
  • Listen to others and try to understand
  • Restate what others have said for clarity
  • Be open to changing your mind
  • Demonstrate a willingness to compromise or seek consensus
  • Ensure what is said in the group stays in the group
  • Give everyone a chance to speak
  • Be examples of ethical leaders (be trustworthy, respectful, responsible, fair, caring and a good citizen)
  • Use parliamentary procedure as a guide
  • Accept and publicly demonstrate support for group decisions
  • Have fun!!!
