NDSU / UMN Potato Scout School
The NDSU / UMN International Potato Scout School will be held on February 21, 2019 from 12:30 to 5:00pm at the Alerus Center in Grand Forks, ND. This year training will be focused on management of pests. Our guest speaker, Dr. Nora Olsen, will discuss potato storage management.
Improving Potato Uniformity with Plant Growth Regulators - Poster
The application of plant growth regulators (PGRs), most commonly gibberellic acid (GA) has been commonly used to improve emergence and influence stem and tuber number. The challenge has been the treatment of GA has been frustrating because of various measurements and application styles for this very potent product. In this experiment we established a standard seed treatment with known rate applied in combinations of gibberellic acid, cytokinin (CK), indole-3-butyric acid (IBA) and naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA) to 10 potato cultivars in field studies performed in North Dakota. In some varieties, emergence, stem number and plant height were increased, while others did not respond to treatments. Additionally, some varieties experienced tuber elongation and a shift in the tuber profile, but rarely yield was increased. PGRs manipulate stem and tuber number and this can be used to improve tuber size profile for the desired use. PGR sensitivity it tied to variety and seed age.

Legislative Update Fall 2018
2018 Election Results: Our elected candidates decide how to spend funds and I don’t know about you, but I’m one of those rare individuals who can find enjoyment watching the legislative in action. A person gets the chance to watch how funding trickles down to agencies, causes, or even a grassroots effort. I am also aware how advocacy, simply defined as supporting or encouraging a cause for certain groups (including NDNC), can play a vital role in guiding how we as nutrition professionals can provide education and/or fulfill job duties.
Aphid Alert for August 25-31
With the season winding down, aphid numbers are definitely trending downwards, only 52 aphids, 38 of which were vector species were recovered from traps at 10 locations this week.
Blightline August 27, 2018
This will be the final regular NDSU Potato Blightline for 2018. Congratulations to all the potato industry in our region. No late blight was reported in ND, MN or MB during this growing season. Late blight has been reported in SE Michigan.
Aphid Alert Week of August 18-24
Aphid vector counts are still decreasing. This week we recovered a total of 133 aphids, 117 of which were vectors. We did, however, only have 10 sites reporting.
Blightline August 20, 2018
No late blight is reported in ND or MN or MB. Late blight is reported in commercial fields in Adams and Marquette counties in Wisconsin. Conditions remain not favorable for late blight the past few days. Continue to apply protectant fungicides on a seven-day schedule for irrigated fields and a 7 to 10 day schedule for non-irrigated fields. Scout fields for late blight until vine kill and harvest.
Aphid Alert week of August 11-17, 2018
Well, the aphid vector numbers are down a bit from last week - we caught approximately what we caught 2 weeks ago. We're still seeing high diversity in the species captured, recovering aphids from 12 different aphid species from 15 of the 16 sites reporting. Hoople (42), Sabin (33), Ada (29), Gully (22), and the site in Nebraska (26) led the counts in trap captures this week.
Blightline Aug 13, 2018
No late blight has been reported in ND or MN or MB. Late blight has been reported in commercial fields in Adams and Marquette counties in Wisconsin. Conditions have not been favorable for late blight the past few days.
Tobacco Rattle Virus in Potato
Corky ring spot is becoming more economically important across several potato production regions in the U.S. largely due to the spread of the virus and because of restrictions on the use of current chemical control options. Tobacco rattle virus incidence has been reported in potato production areas in California, Colorado, Florida, Idaho, Michigan, Minnesota, North Dakota, Oregon, Washington and Wisconsin. The virus has a broad host range, including potato, tobacco, corn, barley, sunflower, ornamental (tulip, iris, etc.) and a variety of weed hosts. The virus is transmitted in the field by soil-inhabiting stubby root nematodes of the genera Trichodorus and Paratrichodorus. Nematicides, soil fumigation and resistant cultivars can be used for nematode management. Detecting and quantifying viruliferous nematodes is important for making planting decisions and management approaches.
Aphid Alert August 10, 2018
Another big aphid week! A total of 301 aphids, 263 of which were vector species. We're continuing to see a lot of different species captured; 15 different aphid species from 14 of the 16 sites reporting. The heaviest flights were in Grenora (80), Crookston (37), and Perham (36).
