Life on the Farm

Peggy Netzer - Burleigh Co. Extension Agent Family Nutrition Program

In May 2014, approximately 150 third grade students from the Bismarck area rotated through four educational stations. The first station focused on turning wheat into pasta. Students learned about growing and processing wheat and then made their own noodles. The ND Dept of Ag had their ND Products display and presentation at the second station. The third station introduced students to farm animals and the various meat products we get from each species. The final station focused on common smells of a farm. Students were given the opportunity to touch and smell a variety of ag-related items—silage, wool, manure, diesel fuel, etc. Each student left with a bag that included educational information as well as snacks and a sample of locally made pasta. Classroom teachers were also given a bag of materials to use to reinforce the lessons in their class. For 2015, we will be expanding the program and anticipate we will double the number of students who participate.
