BisMarket Brings Beet Bucks and Nutrition Education to Area Children and Families
BisMarket, established in 2013, is a community farmers market and non-profit organization governed by a volunteer Board of Directors.
On this Go! Play market day, at which over 600 people were estimated to attend, children and their families were encouraged to attend the market, meet vegetable/fruit growers and vendors, taste fresh produce and learn about the availability and use of SNAP and SNAP incentives at the market. Other activities this day included “Kids Market” vendors, live music, health/wellness booths and physical activity opportunities, and a cooking demonstration using local products from market vendors.
A Scavenger Hunt was held for children and their families. Children were encouraged to participate in a story time and other special activities at the market. The scavenger hunt included answering questions about which fruits or vegetables that grow above or below ground, and to find fruits and/or vegetables in 5 different colors. There were at least 27 participants in the Nutrition Scavenger Hunt and $53 redeemed in “Beet Bucks” SNAP incentives.
BisMarket thanks NDNC members for the support of our project’s printing, promotions and incentives to help us make health promoting foods more accessible to more people.
