Youth Learn About Fire Prevention Through Flat Smokey Challenge

6/26/2020 – The North Dakota Forest Service and USDA Forest Service Dakota Prairie Grasslands are partnering to spread fire prevention awareness with a “Flat Smokey” challenge. William O’Donnell, Grasslands Supervisor for the Dakota Prairie Grasslands said, “We appreciate the opportunity to partner with our friends at the North Dakota Forest Service to share the Fire Prevention message with our youth through the Flat Smokey challenge.”

Children and youth who are interested in participating in the challenge can download flat Smokey from the ND Forest Service’s web page at or the Dakota Prairie Grasslands web page at

From June 26th to July 10th, children can print flat Smokey, color him, cut him out, then take a picture or video of Smokey engaged in a fire prevention activity. Then, post the photo or video on Facebook and tag the ND State Forest Service or Dakota Prairie Grasslands and Smokey swag will be sent to you.

“The Flat Smokey challenge is a fun way to engage our youth in the fire prevention message. I am looking forward to viewing the submissions!” said Tom Claeys, State Forester for the North Dakota Forest Service.
