North Dakota NEAFCS Meeting Minutes

Fall 2016

 

The meeting was called to order by President Julie Garden-Robinson on October 19, 2016, at 4:30 p.m. in the Executive Room at Holiday Inn in Fargo, ND, during Fall Conference.

Attending: Callie Johnson, Marcia Hellandsaas, Vanessa Hoines, Ellen Bjelland, Deb Gebeke, Acacia Stuckle, Desire’e Steinberger, Deb Lee, Kristi Berdal, Brenda Langerud, Shaundra Ziemann-Bolinske, Macine Lukach, Samantha Roth, Karen Armstrong, Julie Garden-Robinson, Kari Helgoe, Karen Bettenhausen, Holly Arnold, Jane Strommen, Janet Wanek, Susan Milender, Cindy Klapperich, Dena Kemmet

Extension Director Chris Boerboom visited with members about PEARS framework, county coordinator position/expectations, incentive program, Title IX training, external review of Extension, travel reimbursement questions.

SECRETARY REPORT: Motion (Marcia Hellandsaas) to approve secretary’s report with corrections, seconded (Desire’e Steinberger) and passed.

TREASURER’S REPORT: Donna Anderson reported the checking account beginning balance (Sept. 23, 2016): $3,618.75. 4-H Foundation account balance (August 31, 2015): $11,361.30. Motion (Ellen Bjelland) to accept the report, seconded (Callie Johnson) and passed.

COMMITTEE REPORTS

Awards/Recognition (Christina Rittenbach) - Julie Garden-Robinson read report:

Six members received awards and recognition at the NEAFCS conference in Montana in September – Julie Garden-Robinson, Jane Strommen, Lori Scharmer, Cindy Klapperich, Ellen Bjelland, Kristi Berdal.

The time to apply for awards is coming up. The online system opens December 1, 2016. State deadline for awards is February 15, 2017, and national deadline is March 15, 2017. Awards applications must be submitted online at neafcs.org. Intentions are to host a Skype meeting to discuss the awards application process.

Member Resources (Ellen Bjelland):

Reported on national campaign for student membership on campuses with FCS or Extension degrees.  There are potential member opportunities through 1994 land grant institutions. Noted some states pay life dues upon retirement. Recognized guests new to Extension - Allison Brennen, PRC Region 5; Carrie Johnson, Family Finance specialist on campus; Liz Larson, PRC – Region 7.

Public Affairs (Vanessa Hoines):

2016 Friend of NEAFCS awarded to Aging Services, a division of ND Department of Human Services at recognition luncheon. Impact reports highlighting ND programming for the national website are encouraged to be coordinated and completed. It was recommended that members concisely summarize the program and impact. PILD conference is in April 2017, interested members contact Vanessa or Julie. Motion (Desire’e Steinberger) to pay bills for the frames for the NDNEAFCS friend of 4-H awards, seconded (Karen Bettenhausen). Motion passed.

Professional Development (Molly Soeby) - Brenda Langerud read report:

The Webinar Best Practices Training held in Montana on May 13, 2016, was well attended. This opportunity was provided to us by FINRA Investor Education Foundation and Montana State University Extension. Attendees included: Susan Milender, Samantha Roth, Ellen Bjelland, Kari Helgoe, Vanessa Hoines, Amy Lick, Molly Soeby, Kayla Bakewell and Brenda Langerud. The NDEAFCS 2016 Annual Conference was held in Big Sky, MT, in September. Eleven members attended.

It was noted other states hold retreats for professional development opportunities and sponsor 5K walk/run as a fundraiser for organization.  

4-H Foundation Representative (Deb Lee):

Asked members to consider the 4-H Foundation for memorial gifts.

FCS Promotional Committee (Shaundra Ziemann-Bolinske):

Motion (Janet Wanek) for committee to compose a letter to introduce Invest Now Pay Later to elected officials for members to send out, seconded (Vanessa Hoines). Discussion held. Motion passed.

OLD BUSINESS:

NDEAFCS Fall Conference Auction

Holly Arnold reported that the event went very well, with great help and support. $3,837 raised overall with NDNEAFCS receiving $2,110.35. Other associations each receive $575.55.

Three new members took opportunity for free membership for first year in 2016. Ongoing opportunity for new members.

Members attending the NEAFCS Annual Conference in Big Sky, MT, shared best practices.

NEW BUSINESS:

Motion (Samantha Roth) to donate $50 to the NDAAEA to help with expenses for sponsor thank you notes and gifts, seconded (Vanessa Hoines). Discussion held. Motion passed.

 

Motion (Samantha Roth) to draft guidelines and expectations for working with FCE/Homemakers clubs with committee consisting of Ellen Bjelland, Vanessa Hoines, Brenda Langerud, seconded (Macine Lukach). Samantha Roth amended the motion to add Desire’e Steinberger to the committee, seconded (Callie Johnson). Amendment passes. Motion passes.

 

Motion (Samantha Roth) to form a committee to look at our constitution and bylaws, seconded (Janet Wanek). Samantha Roth amended the motion to have president appoint committee members, seconded, (Janet Wanek). Amendment passes. Motion passes.
