Minutes of the November 6, 2012 NDEAFCS Meeting

Meeting called to order by President Marcia Hellandsaas on November 6th, 2012 at 4:00 pm at the Holiday Inn at Fargo, ND. 

Members Attending:  Donna L. SECRETARY’S REPORT:  Motion (Dena Kemmet) to accept secretary’s report with corrections, seconded (Sam Roth) and approved.

TREASURER’S REPORT: Lori Scharmer reported the checking account beginning balance (April 30, 2012): $ 2,240.31.  Ending Balance (Oct. 31, 2012): $2,111.17.  4-H Foundation Investment  Account Ending Balance as of Nov. 30, 2011: $9,540.32.  Motion (Callie Johnson) to accept the report, seconded (Ellen Bjelland) and approved.

Updates were given by Dr. Virginia Clark Johnson on the College of HDE, which included a fund drive for improvements to the FLC food labs on campus.  Deb Gebeke reported that she will add $20 to pledges made to the fund through the end of November.  Director Chris Boerboom reported on SBARE priorities, funding for programming, and answered questions from members.

COMMITTEE REPORTS

Awards / Recognition (Samantha Roth):

Family Health and Wellness: 1st place Central Region Winner – Julie Garden-Robinson and Team

Florence Hall: 1st place National Winner – Sara Croymans and Team, Minnesota (Lori Scharmer was included on team)

Distinguished Service Award: Brenda Langerud

Award applications are due to Sam by Feb 1st

Member Resources (Karen Armstrong):  A student membership invitation and application form has been electronically sent to education majors through avenues provided by Mari Borr, Ph.D. Assistant Professor School of Education. Student membership posters will be posted in the Family Life Center this week. Three new and prospective members introduced themselves to the group and told about their professional backgrounds.  NEAFCS pins were presented to incoming members. NDAFCS pins are available for purchase by members. Lori explained the membership application process and that dues are $115 and due December 1st.

Public Affairs (Julie Garden-Robinson): 

  • Recipient of “Friend of NDEAFCS”:  Lynn Bigwood, Northarvest Bean Growers (“The Bean Lady”.)
  • Future conferences and sessions:  JCEP Leadership Conference, Feb. 12-14, 2013, Marriott Downtown, Memphis, TN; Public Issue Leadership Development (PILD), April 21-24, 2013, Westin, Alexandria, VA; Galaxy IV Conference, Sept. 15-22, 2013, Pittsburgh, PA; Annual Session, Sept. 15-19, 2014, Lexington, KY.
  • Living Well – More Than A Cookbook Creative Ideas Grant Program (Members):  See online application form.  NEAFCS is excited to invite you to apply for a CIP grant that will enable you to use the Living Well – More Than a Cookbook for you FCS educational needs.  This grant will be offered in an unlimited number for a program or programs in the upcoming year.  The grant will provide Living Well cookbooks that can be used as part of an instructional (teaching) program at a minimal cost to the NEAFCS member or team.  The only expense to the applicant will be a $20 fee per case (10 books) to cover the cost of shipping and handling.  Books CAN NOT be used for profit purposes by individual members, member teams or state affiliates.  Grants will be subject to approval by the Creative Ideas Program Grant Committee, which consists of the President, President-Elect, Treasurer and 4 Regional Directors.  Within 1 month of the completion of your program or event, you will be required to turn in a report outlining how the grant books were used.  Information on who the report is to be mailed to will be provided after the grant has been approved.  http://www.neafcs.org/content.asp?pageID=1648

Professional Development (Callie Johnson):  No one applied for professional development funds.  $200 is available.

4-H Foundation Representative (Dena Kemmet):

  • Recognition Social at the State Fair. Successful and will be held again in 2013.
  • Golf Tournaments – June and August. Income was on target. Participation down. Mandan will be different in 2013 - it will be a shooting event.
  • Case IH Raffle - $36,000 raised in 2012. $12,000 given back to counties. Counties sold more this year so higher percentages went back to them. New raffle information coming soon (sales start in January).
  • Giving Hearts Day – Through Dakota Medical Foundation. Looking for a match sponsor. On Valentine’s Day. More information will be coming!
  • Capital Campaign - Still in the silent phase. Holding off on public phase until after legislative session. $583,500 has been raised.
  • Budget Info – 4-H Foundation Funding – Sharon Query will receive up to $1000 for FCS programs and Julie Garden-Robinson will receive up to $2,500 for Food and Nutrition programming.
  • Donations – Employees that don’t already, should consider payroll deduction or other giving to the foundation.

State Fair Representative (Donna Anderson):  The next meeting of the State Fair committee will be held November 15th in Bismarck.  Donna would like to see a new State Fair Representative from our organization.

UNFINISHED BUSINESS:  Sam Roth reported on the Silent Auction held Nov. 5th during Extension Conference, which was chaired by Sam and Mary Froelich.  Net funds raised were $2,518, the association kept 55% which is $1,384.90. NDAEA, NDAE4-HYW and ESP each received $377.70 (15%). Thank you to everyone for helping out and making it successful!

NEW BUSINESS:

Motion (Rita Ussatis) to donate $200, which was not used from the Professional Development Fund, to the NDSU HD&E Renovation Project.  Seconded (Dena) and motion carried.

National Association Meeting Report was given by Brenda, Rita, Julie, Lori and Vanessa. 

Discussion was held regarding titles of Extension Agent vs. Extension Educator.  Motion (Lori Scharmer) that Vanessa “test the waters” with a new title.  Motion died due to lack of 2nd.

Deb Gebeke explained “Marketing our Brand” to promote our profession.  Ideas will be gathered for input and we will have a discussion at a future meeting.

Our Spring Meeting will be held via Wimba or Livemeeting.  Some members prefer Wimba, as Livemeeting does not work for everyone.

Lori reported on the JCEP Survey, which revealed that members consider the benefits of professional memberships to be networking, advocacy for FCS, and a voice to communicate with administration.

Marcia and Lori reported on the NDJCEP meeting, where cost of living increases were discussed for oil areas.  The Legislature needs to approve cost of living increases.
