Are You Raising Teenagers? Know Someone Who Is?

“I just don’t know how to communicate with this kid anymore.”

“When did they grow up so fast? So much has changed.”

Perhaps, you are raising a teenager and have said some of these things or a similar thought recently. Frequently parents figure once their child has reached the teenager stage that they should have “figured it out” when it comes to parenting. I have a wise colleague who will tell parents, “Remember, you have never parented this particular child at this particular stage.” So we say, give yourself some grace! Every stage brings exciting new steps along with unique challenges – and parenting teens is no different. When you are moving in to new stages as a parent and as a family, it can be helpful to seek out information or add a few tools to your parenting toolbox.

In the Parent and Family Resource Center, some of the curriculums we utilize are from Active Parenting. Their philosophy when it comes to parenting teenagers is that it is the parent’s job is to be in the leadership role, however, that doesn’t mean it’s simply “laying down the law.” It requires skills and the right attitudes. It also involves “proactively anticipating and preventing problems, developing mutually respectful relationships, enforcing fair discipline, maintaining effective communication, using productive problem-solving methods, and encouraging the participating and success of everyone involved.” That can seem like a lot of tasks and ideas to grapple with. That is why our Parent and Family Resource Center is offering an Active Parenting of Teens program for parents to learn more! It is a three evening program where participants receive information and have the opportunity to discuss with others who are also raising teenagers. Some topics include ways to have fun together, developing respect, giving choices, communication, defining responsibility and disciplining teens. You will be able to hear and share experiences, successes, and struggles in a safe conversation space.

We have collaborated with the Mandan High School counseling staff for the second year to offer this program. The Active Parenting series is designed to be a few weeks long so that you can use your tools during the week and have a chance to come back, discuss how the week went, and then gain a few more tools for the following week. Parents, grandparents, foster parents, or anyone who is helping raise teenagers are all encouraged to attend.
