Being a Role Model for Your Kids

It doesn’t have to be too complicated. Start small! If you make a habit of brushing your teeth with the bathroom door open and then talking about how clean your teeth feel, chances are your children will do the same with less prompting. One family lucky enough to have two bathroom sinks calls “toothbrush party!” and all three youngsters gather with their dad to brush their teeth as a prerecorded two-minute song plays in the background. “It’s a little messy” admits the father, “but if it gets all our teeth clean in two minutes with no fussing, I am happy to wash the sinks.” This parent is promoting a healthful habit by brushing with his kids and making it fun. Now think of the kids or youth in your life – what simple habits are you modeling each day? Phone or screen time use? What you choose to put on your dinner plate? There are plenty of opportunities to influence your child’s habits and instill values along the way, simply by being aware of the role models they have in their lives.

Also, I want to take the time to bid farewell. I have resigned from my position with the NDSU Extension Parent & Family Resource Center as I will be moving to Sioux Falls to be closer to family. I appreciate the many ways this community has welcomed me, been a great partner, and shown such commitment to the kiddos of this community. The years I have been in this role have been a wonderful ride! This will be the last column I work on as my last day is October 2nd, but the other Morton County agents will continue to fill our column with wonderful resources and information. And soon enough there will be a new agent with the Parent & Family Resource Center – so stay tuned! Sincerely, Liz Larson
