4-H Update
June 6, 2016

Youth Livestock Quality Assurance
I am a member of the ND 4-H Animal Science Committee. We are in the process of implementing a Youth Livestock Quality Assurance (YLQA) program in North Dakota. Eventually this will be mandatory for all youth that show livestock to participate in. It is already mandatory in many other states.  As of now it looks like the mandatory implementation will take place in 2017.

Just to get a jump start on the YLQA program extension agents from North Dakota will be offering trainings at different locations this summer. Morton county 4-Hers are invited to attend the YLQA Program that is being held at the North Dakota 4-H Camp, Washburn Tuesday, June 14, 2016 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. in the Johnsrud Education Center. There is no cost for the training. This training will be held in conjunction with the 4-H Livestock Camp.  If you have any questions about the training please feel free to call or email Jackie at 701.667.3340 or Jackie.buckley@ndsu.edu .

Livestock Tagging Program
As another heads up, our committee is working on getting a tagging program implemented for livestock in North Dakota. There will be more information to follow.

T-Shirts for the State Fair
It looks like all livestock exhibitors at the state fair will be issued a State Fair t-shirt. The shirt will have the ND State Fair logo as well as the 4-H and FFA logo on it. Youth will be allowed to wear this shirt for either the 4-H or the FFA show. At this time I am not sure what the color the t-shirt will be. I am pushing that it will not be white. But the powers that be may over-rule us.

If you will need more than one shirt you will have to purchase additional shirts for about the cost of $5. 4-H and FFA exhibitors will have to wear the shirts for all shows with the exception of the horse show. We are still checking on the shirt for the poultry and rabbit show since it is also recommended that a long-sleeved shirt be worn. You will not be allowed to wear shirts with the 4-H chevron or 4-H clover on them to meet the dress code. You may contact Jackie with any questions on this matter as well.
