4-H Weekly Update
July 20, 2016

Good Afternoon Morton County 4-H Families!

We have lots to tell you this week in preparation for the North Dakota State Fair and Morton County 4-H Achievement Days.

If you are showing at the North Dakota State Fair any livestock, you will need to be in official 4-H Dress.  This is a change from a previous 4-H Update.  Again, YOU MUST BE IN OFFICIAL 4-H DRESS TO SHOW LIVESTOCK.

Consumer Choices and Project Expo participants must also be official 4-H Dress.

Official 4-H T-shirts will be available for sale at the 4-H office in the State Fair Center.

The 4-H Clovershop will be moving to the North Dakota State Fair on Thursday, July 21 and returning to the Morton County Fair on August 4th.  If you need to purchase shirts locally, please make note of these dates as we will not have any in the office to purchase during this time.

If you are involved in 4-H Shooting Sports in the county, we have been asked to help with inflatables and food on Saturday, July 23rd. All proceeds from this event will benefit Morton County 4-H Shooting Sports.  We are looking at a very generous donation and need your help!  We are looking for at least 15 volunteers for the day, of course, the more the merrier.  With the funds generated from this event, we will be purchasing shooting vests, small bore rifles, air rifles, ear and eye protection, targets, etc. to benefit the shotgun, small bore rifle and muzzleloading program.

When:  Saturday, July 23rd
Where:  Burleigh County 4-H Building, Bismarck
Time:  8:30am
What:  Assist with inflatables, talk to folks about 4-H Shooting Sports and serve food
Dress:  Would be great if you could wear a 4-H t-shirt, but not required, smiley faces are

Questions about the day can be directed to me at karla.meikle@ndsu.edu.  I will be traveling in preparation for the North Dakota State Fair on Wednesday but will answer when I can.

The ND 4-H Foundation along with the ND FFA Foundation were gifted a calf catcher by Triple M Ranch in Bismarck. The Calf Catcher which retails for $2,600 will be auctioned off at the ND FFA Auction at the State Fair on Saturday at 11:00 am for the silent auction and 2:00 pm for the live auction.

The money received for this item will be split evenly between FFA and 4-H. If you know of anyone interested in purchasing a calf catcher please encourage them to attend or if they are very interested but unable to attend please provide them my contact information and we can have a person in the audience bid for them.

Here is the schedule for General 4-H Achievement Day on Thursday, August 4th:

8:30am                 Horse Show Participants will begin interview judging at this time, If you have more than 10 projects, we ask that you arrive at 8:30am so you can complete your interview judging by 12:30pm.

9:30am                 All 4-H members may begin Interview Judging

If you decided not to enter an exhibit but received exhibit tags, please bring them along with you and hand them in at the check in desk on August 4th.  This will allow us to let the judges know if there have been scratches.

Reminder if you plan on participating in the livestock and horse events, you must enter a record book to participate in the premium sale.  No exceptions.

Gentle reminder, the Morton County 4-H Council adopted a policy that you must have attended 6 meetings in order to participate in Morton County 4-H Achievement Days.  If you have questions regarding this policy, please visit with Karla.

Jackie, Vanessa and I will be in Minot judging static exhibits on Wednesday, July 20.  If you need to reach us please feel free to contact us via email or call our cell phones, we would be happy to answer your questions or you can leave us a message at the office and we will get back to you on Thursday.

Jackie will be leaving on Friday for the week and will be in Minot working the state fair.

Karla will be out of the office for work on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday next week.

Vanessa will be out of the office for work on Monday and Tuesday of next week.

Have a great week!  It’s an exciting time of the year!
