4-H Update
April 27, 2016

Good Morning Everyone,

Signs of summer…..the State Fair Exhibit Guidelines have arrived in the office!  We have lots of other news to share with this update so please keep reading!

MISSOURI RIVER 3-D ARCHERY SHOOT
The 4th Annual Missouri River 3D Shoot registration is underway.  It will be held April 30, 2016 at Nishu Bowmen in Bismarck.  The cost is only $15 and youth do not need to be a 4-H’er to participate!

CONSUMER CHOICES REGISTRATION
Registration is now open for the Consumer Choices contest to be held on June 7th at Christ the King School.  Please register at http://tinyurl.com/2016consumerchoices or call the office at 701-667-3340.

DISTRICT COMMUNICATION ARTS CONTEST
The District Communication Arts Contest will be held on Tuesday May 31 at 4:00pm at Christ the King School.  Registration will begin at 3:30pm.  Please register at http://tinyurl.com/2016CommunicationArts

PROJECT REGISTRATION DEADLINE
The deadline for registering for projects for the 2015-2016 4-H year is May 1.  You will not be able to add or drop projects after this date.

4-H ACHIEVEMENT DAY EXHIBIT REGISTRATION
Registrations for Morton County 4-H Achievement Days will be in the mail the week of May 15.  Registrations will be due back into the office by June 10.  This is the information we will need to make your exhibit tags for 4-H Achievement Days as well as help us plan how many judges we need to have for Achievement Days.

DO YOUR OWN THING
The Do Your Own Thing project paperwork needs to be approved by Karla Meikle by May 16th in order for a 4-Her to exhibit in this project at General Achievement Day, August 4th.  Please note:  The Do Your Own Thing Project will not be going forward after the 2016 4-H Year. 

4-H PREMIUM SALE
4-H families should be soliciting buyers for the premium sale for the Morton County Fair. 

HORSE STALLING
We will begin to take horse stalling registrations on May 1.  Please follow the link www.tinyurl.com/2016stalls.  Please note, we are not guaranteeing anyone inside stalling. 

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
We are looking for adult volunteers to assist with the Consumer Choices contest on June 7th.  More specifically card collectors, timers, reason judges, scoring help, room monitors.  Please contact Kari at kari.presler@ndsu.edu or Vanessa at vanessa.hoines@ndsu.edu.

4-H/OPEN CLASS POULTRY SHOW
The 4-H/Open Class Poultry Show will be held in 2016 according to a press release from the ND Board of Animal Health. We would like to remind you that you will need to do the blood test for Pullorum. If you will be exhibiting chickens Jackie will be available to do the testing for you. The testing must be complete prior to July 20th. Please make an appointment if you will be exhibiting poultry.

EQUINE ENCOUNTER
Equine Encounter Scheduled – June 8, 2016, 5:30 p.m.

Jackie would like to take this opportunity to invite all 4-H Horse enthusiasts to attend this event. A pizza supper will begin at 5:45 p.m. We will meet at the truck stop west of Mandan at 5:30 p.m. I know that this is some clubs regular Wednesday riding event in New Salem. Hope you all will consider attending this event instead. Topics will include:

·       Pasture walk – grass, forb and weed identification
·       Pasture rotation
·       Bisosecurity
·       Worming your horse
·       Manure management

HORTICULTURE MEETING
Horticulture Meeting Scheduled in New Salem

4-H members, parents and leaders who are interested in learning more about horticulture are invited to attend. It will be held Monday, May 16, 2016 at 6:30 p.m. at the Morton County Fairgrounds. There is a registration fee of $5 to attend to cover the cost of the light lunch. Call 667.3340 to register or email jackie.buckley@ndsu.edu by Wednesday, May 11th.

April Oster from Aprils Flowers, Pick City will be on hand with a trailer full of plants to purchase. She will also provide a plant for those attending.

STATE ARCHERY IN WASHBURN
The State 4-H Archery Contest will be in Washburn May 13-15.  All archers are invited to participate.  An email will be sent out with additional information later this week.
