Pledge our Heart to 4-H on Giving Hearts Day

The North Dakota 4-H Foundation is participating in the 2014 Giving Hearts Day, a 24-hour online fundraising event on Feb. 13.

On Giving Hearts Day, contributions to the North Dakota 4-H Foundation will be matched up to $60,000 by donors who have committed matching dollars to encourage others to join them in supporting the 26,000 North Dakota youth who participate in 4-H each year.

The North Dakota 4-H Foundation secures and manages financial resources to enhance and expand the state's 4-H program. Funds raised will support state and local 4-H leadership development and educational opportunities in areas of animal and plant science, consumer and family science, healthy lifestyle education, engineering and technology, environmental and earth sciences, citizenship and personal development, communications and expressive arts.

Research has shown that youth who participate in 4-H do better in school, are 56 percent more likely to be physically active and are three times more likely to contribute to their communities.

The research is great, and it supports what we already know. 4-H youth are not the kids who are sitting around playing video games and getting into trouble. Instead, they are volunteering at local food shelves, showing projects at the fair, building robots, giving speeches, planting gardens. Basically, they are preparing to be our next generation of leaders. North Dakota 4-H’ers are inspiring!

Supporting the North Dakota 4-H Foundation and having your donation matched on Giving Hearts Day is an easy, three-step process:

  1. Go to www.impactgiveback.org
  2. Click “Donate”
  3. Choose the 4-H Foundation of North Dakota

The first Giving Hearts Day was in 2008. It generated 1,452 online donations totaling $325,000 for local nonprofit organizations. In 2013, 16,989 donations to 179 charities raised a little more than $3 million in one 24-hour period.

Nourishing Boomers & Beyond

We have launched a new effort in nutrition, health and aging called “Nourishing Boomers & Beyond.”

The goal is to provide nutrition and overall wellness education and online support to help adults sustain a healthy lifestyle and we need your help in spreading the word to your friends and family!

The program is targeted to men and women ages 50-plus, but any adult will find something applicable.  The content includes a monthly newsletter and online learning activities from recipes to video exercises.

Monthly classes on a specific topic are scheduled for the fourth Monday of each month at 3 p.m. at the Beulah Civic Center. Please call to register for the class if you plan to attend. In addition, our county Facebook page is available to “friend” at NDSU Extension Service Mercer County to receive updates related to the program.

Visit http://www.ndsu.edu/boomers to sign up for the free monthly newsletter and check out the self-paced online content.
