Family and Community Wellness

McIntosh County Extension offers Family and Community Wellness programs to the public and organizations. Following are the programs available.

Family Life and Relationships/Life Skills

Passing on Family Memories

As a result of participation in this program, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the process and value of reminiscence in older adulthood
  • Identify purposes for actively working to pass on family memories
  • Engage in planning that will lead toward personal efforts to pass on family memories

Strengthening Parent-Teen Relationships in a Wireless World *(Designed as a 90-minute lesson)

 As a result of participation in this program, participants will have:

  • Described how they would like to connect with their teens (two concrete examples)
  • Contrasted their current rules, boundaries and expectations with how they would like them to be
  • Created a plan to determine which digital media they will allow, who will pay for each type of technology (cellphones, games, services, etc.) and at what age teens will take over the payments
  • Critiqued how the use of technology is working

(4-H) Generational Diversity in the Workplace and Community

Participants will be able to:

  • Identify the definition and components of a generation
  • Recognize specific characteristics of each generation
  • Understand the similarities and differences among generations
  • Note the challenges in the workplace and community
  • Promote effective strategies for addressing generational differences in various settings

Overdone *(designed as a 90-minute session)

Participants will:

  • Assess their family’s schedule to determine if it is too full
  • Contrast current family schedule with family’s ideal schedule
  • Determine why schedules are so busy and decide how to eliminate activities from the current schedule 
  • Commit to incorporating wellness tips into busy lifestyles to promote healthy family living

Are You Ready? The College Transition

*(This can be done as a 2-hour program with students only; or in 3 sessions, consisting of 2-hours each, with both students and parents)

The curriculum has four areas of emphasis:

  • Academics
  • Finances
  • Relationships
  • Healthy Choices

This program will help you as a student or a parent to:

  • Understand and manage the normal emotions and conflicts that result from this major transition.
  • Increase communication and problem-solving skills.
  • Create a plan for what to do when faced with situations regarding relationships.


Aging and Wellness Issues

Healthy Living for the Second Half of Life

As a result of participation in this program, participants will be able to:

  • Build awareness of healthy living habits for individuals as they age
  • Identify priorities and steps to take toward healthy personal efforts as aging occurs
  • Plan how to continue to learn and stay involved in positive activities as they age
  • Foster dialogue among adults and others about positive aging and life skills needed in later years

Making Sense of Sensory Losses as we Age

As a result of participation in this program, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the process of aging and normal physical changes
  • Engage in activities that assist in understanding sensory loss
  • Understand what impact sensory losses have on day-to-day living
  • Identify ways of adapting to sensory loss as we age 

The Caregiving Challenge

Provides information about family caregivers – such as who they are, the impact of caregiving, and some tools for managing the stress of caregiving.  Included also is information on a specific program, Powerful Tools for Caregivers, and how it can help caregivers thrive, not just survive. Additionally, this program provides some information on other resources available.

Taking Steps to Prevent Falling Head over Heels Please note: this particular program is not an NDSU Extension program, but an AARP (American Association of Retired Persons) program

As we age, our sight, hearing, muscle strength, coordination, and reflexes change, weakening our balance. Also, some health conditions, such as diabetes, heart disease, circulation problems, and vitamin D deficiencies can affect balance. One in every three people age 65 and older falls each year. You don’t have to be one of them! There are things you can do to reduce your risk of falling.

Have you seen my car keys?

Participants will be able to:

  • Understand how memory works
  • Describe the three types of memory and associated changes with age
  • Understand the different types of health factors that impact memory, which may be reversible
  • Increase awareness/knowledge of specific lifestyle behaviors that can protect memory
  • Learn practical strategies they can use at home to improve memory
  • Recognize signs of a serious memory problem needing medical attention

Understanding Depression in Later Life

As a result of participation in this program, participants will be able to:

  • Understand key issues relating to depression in later life
  • Learn about signs of depression in later life
  • Explore specific strategies for managing depression in later life
  • Gain knowledge of specific resources to deal with depression in later life

Livable Homes: Evaluating Our Homes for Comfort, Safety, and Independence

Participants will be able to:

  • Describe the importance of the living spaces designed to maintain independence and safety
  • Identify home design features and safety hazards that should be changed to promote independence and prevent accidents
  • Conduct home evaluation and home safety assessments


Personal and Family Finance

Family Communication and Estate Planning

As a result of participation in this program, participants will be able to:

  • Build awareness of family estate planning
  • Encourage key conversations on estate planning topics
  • Foster dialogue among family members to facilitate understanding in the estate planning process
  • Learn about and implement practical strategies for family communication in the estate planning process

Critical Conversations about Long-term Health Care

The goal of this program is to increase awareness of long-term care planning issues and financial preparation.

As a result of participating in this program, learners will:

  • Recognize their risk for needing long-term care
  • Increase their knowledge about long-term care issues
  • Understand costs and implications of financing long-term care
  • Identify financial security goals for later life
  • Become aware of long-term care planning tools
  • Understand financial alternatives
  • Become a better consumer in the selection of a long-term care facility


Food, Nutrition and Health

Our Traveling Food

Our food travels an average of 1,500 miles to reach our plates. One way to reduce total energy usage is to consume foods grown in our community or region. Locally grown and produced foods sometimes can be better because they are freshly harvested and require less transportation time, during which nutrient losses can occur due to improper packaging (crushing of produce) and holding temperatures.


  • Participants will understand how food miles can be converted to calories (or energy used) and therefore relate available foods as a part of the whole energy usage system.
  • Participants will explore ideas for accessing more locally grown foods as a way to reduce total energy usage in the food system.

ND Food and Culture

Participants will know some basic information about the cultures in North Dakota, especially related to food.


Nutrition Then and Now

New information becomes available in our constantly changing world of nutrition. Even with all of the new technology and advances of our time, we cannot forget wisdom from the past. This lesson examines U.S. Food Administration guidelines from World War I and compares them with present-day

U.S. Department of Agriculture guidelines. The more things change, the more they stay the same.


Tossed Out: Saving Food in America

This program investigates the impact of food waste on the people and environment in which we live. We also will look at the major causes of waste and ways we can reduce waste throughout the food supply system. Reducing food waste has been an emerging topic of discussion in the world because of its great potential to reduce the burden on the environment, save valuable nutrients that could be nourishing people and save money. Solutions are proposed for every level in the food supply system, but this lesson will focus especially on practical and realistic approaches for us to reduce food waste at the household level.

Simply Soy

  • Participants will be able to identify food sources of soy.
  • Participants will know what counts as a serving of soy.
  • Participants will know MyPlate recommendations for soy.
  • Participants will know how to prepare soy.

Mindful: Mindless Eating

The reasons why we overeat are endless. The reasons can be as simple as a co-worker brought doughnuts or the vending machine dropped two candy bars. They are normal occurrences. We don’t think too much about them. That’s the problem.


Could you Have Prediabetes?

Participants will:

  • Increase their awareness of how to improve their health to prevent prediabetes and Type 2 diabetes
  • Be able to identify specific risk factors associated with prediabetes and Type 2 diabetes
  • Know the definitions of prediabetes and Type 2 diabetes
  • Be aware of the serious health complications with Type 2 diabetes
  • Know how to build a healthful plate
  • Be able to set a goal for themselves with physical activity
  • Be able to make more healthful lifestyle choices

Nourishing Boomers

As we age, we may not be as active as we used to be. Maybe we have put on a few extra pounds, or we’ve developed health issues such as high blood pressure or diabetes.

The North Dakota State University Extension Service has developed Nourishing Boomers and Beyond, a program to provide North Dakotans age 50 and older with information and strategies to eat more nutritiously and be more physically active so they can reduce their risk of developing chronic diseases.

Participants may choose from the list of topics within Nourishing Boomers-each is presented in a 1-hour timeframe and focuses on one of these body systems

Manage Stress for Better Health

Participants will be able to:

  • Understand the psychological and physiological effects of stress
  • Identify factors that contribute to stress
  • Assess individual risk factors related to stress
  • Understand and learn how to use practical strategies and techniques to manage their reaction to stress
  • Develop a personal action plan for taking charge of their levels of stress


The purpose of the NDSU Extension Service is to create learning partnerships that help adults and youth enhance their lives and communities. Therefore, we offer a variety of research-based educational programs to assist people in the areas of human development, family life, aging and wellness, and personal and family finances.
