Sunflower Help: Blackbird Control

USDA APHIS Wildlife Services (WS) was able to get more money to help in hazing blackbirds this fall. Here is the list of additional help that will be available this fall:  There will be additional “Boots on the Ground” WS Specialists, along with existing WS staff, that will allow WS to utilize multiple personnel with multiple harassment techniques to address ND sunflower producers experiencing blackbird damage. Help will be available from August through November. Check out the attached map for updated contact information for all WS staff and specialists that can be contacted for help this fall.  More propane cannons will be added with timers to be loaned to producers needing assistance.  WS has also developed a “cannon plate” to use in conjunction with a T-post to get the propane cannon off the ground for better sound resonance and to prevent rodent damage. WS will distribute one of these plates free of charge per producer to provide them a template to build more of their own propane cannon plates. Check out page 1 of the first attachment to see what the cannon plate looks like in use.  Additional funds will allow WS to distribute substantially more “screamer” pyrotechnics with launchers to producers  WS staff using UAS’s, in conjunction with pyrotechnics and shotguns will also be used and may prove to be an extremely effective harassment technique for operational blackbird damage management in ND. Contact the Wildlife Services office in Bismarck (701-355-3300) if the field staff cannot be reached.
