Ranch Hand Top 10; November 2011

Top 10 management strategies to consider on your operation during November 2011:
  1. Monitor cattle on crop residue, cover crops of stockpiled forages closely; provide required supplement and take them off when available feed is gone
  2. Test feeds and develop rations for all classes of cattle maintained; call your county Extension agent for help
  3. Move cows to wintering areas; snow is right around the corner
  4. Vaccinate backgrounding and feedlot calves within 14 days of arrival, and consider delaying dehorning and castrating until 30 days after immunization
  5. Ensure all appropriate paperwork and health certificates are in order for cattle imported from out of state
  6. Implant calves bound for feedlots unless receiving sufficient premium from natural markets
  7. Give appropriate booster shots to calves in a timely manner
  8. If dealing with very high-risk calves, consider mass medication on arrival to feeding area
  9. Body condition score all cattle, finalize winter feeding groups, concentrate on getting thin cows into good condition before extreme cold
  10. Consider safety of all people while working with cattle and machinery
