Cattle Price Outlook - January 2010
Are happier times ahead for the meat industry? NDSU livestock economist Tim Petry sees some potential for profit despite potentially volatile cattle markets.
Although unpredictable corn prices and uncertain U.S. and world economies will make the cattle market hard to predict, Petry reminds producers that margin, not price level is important.
Backgrounding and feeding may be profitable in 2010, according to Petry. He recommends that producers use pre-pricing to lock in prices for both feed and cattle.
