Cattle Handling for Backgrounding Feedlots

Use of good care and handling practices can make your backgrounding feedlot operation more safe and successful.

Four basic cattle behavior principles can guide you in making the handling of your calves safe and low-stress.

  • Cattle want to see you
  • Cattle want to go around you
  • Cattle want to go with and will go to other cattle
  • Cattle can think of only one thing at a time

It is important to remember; handling facilities do not need to be expensive or elaborate but must be functional, economical, and most important, safe.

Check out the video below for a demonstration on handling backgrounded calves. Click here for more information on backgrounding cattle.
