Backgrounding Cattle - Price Outlook 2010-11

Corn prices have increased significantly during the past two months, and are quite volatile as the size of the corn crop remains in question.  That has caused feeder cattle prices to be volatile as well, and may have some producers questioning whether to background calves this fall.  In the video below, livestock economist, Tim Petry, addresses important fundamental factors affecting corn and feeder cattle prices, key points that affect the profitability of backgrounding programs, and price risk management tools that can be considered during these volatile times.
